You know, everyone thought we were crazy when we moved to Oklahoma 6 years ago. We came from Las Vegas, NV and had both grown up in big cities. The whole idea of living in a small town or more country-like area was so foreign to our family that they all expected us to be back within the year. Now that they've been here to visit, and have seen how we live, they understand why we fell in love with Oklahoma and have accepted the fact that we may not ever make it back out there.

Now we're planning for real country living, moving out of the city and getting several acres of land. I don't know if we'll ever have livestock or not, but we definitely want to have several chickens and gardens. I still wonder what they think of that.

Carla- did some lady ask you about guineas? I was out with the animals and some woman asked about hatchlings I pointed out your and told her you were in the yellow shirt cause she said she was not ready for them yet. I bought the pregnant doe last night and I started to think it is definitely gonna be a waiting game to see how long it is until she has them. They are also hoping to get a lisense to sell goats etc but will be doing this on another night seperate from the chickens. After they move to Blanchard part of the proceeds will be going to the Blanchard Vo Ag department. Th building is I believe south of the rodeo grounds on County Line Road there in Blanchard. I do have to comment on a few things. This auction first went choice most others you have to buy the cage full now that was only for some of them if there was 2 pairs in a cage them you bought a pair or on the baby chciks I think it was by 5s or so but it was still nicer then having to buy 50 chicks when you wanted 10. Yes it was very hot however the auction kept people out misting the animals and also had someone at the door so people could not walk out with other animals ( this seemed to happen a lot at Cement).

I lived in Ca. my first 11 years. my folks were from Arkansas so we moved, I can remember crossing the state line from Texas into Ok and asking my folks if we were there because everything just seemed right.
That was almost 50 years ago..I have had to live other places But Oklahoma was always home to me.

Woo-hoo we got some rain!

In other news, I shot my first predator last night. Possum got greedy, ate all the eggs and decided he wanted a chicken to go along with it. The chicken had other thoughts to that and raised a ruckus. He (the chicken, young cockerel - buff orp/barred rock mix), is fine. Just missing a few feathers.

Just make sure that where you buy will allow poultry. Some housing developments and cities/towns have restrictions against certain critters. Luckily, my place is an old farmhouse and still zoned agricultural, but all around me is new giant homes with big restrictions ... they can't have what I have. I just hope they don't complain about the roosters crowing or guineas cackling or the eventual peacock noises!

Yes, that lady came to me and gave me her name & phone number on a piece of paper. She said her daughter wants some guineas, but she's away at a camp now. Thank you for sending her my way. It's funny ... that lady used to work on airplanes on the same crew that I worked about 6 or 7 years ago. I thought I vaguely recognized her, but until I saw her name on the piece of paper, I wasn't sure. I'm getting so old and confused!

We really enjoyed the auction last night. Except for the heat, it was very well done. I thought the auctioneer was great. Very fast, very proficient, sometimes even funny! They definitely had a lot of help (I think mostly volunteers) that kept the auction running well. The only thing that seemed to be a problem was that the auctioneer had to stop several times and ask parents to remove their children from the animal/bird area. I noticed several times when I went back to check on my birds that children were playing with baby chicks or sticking their hands in cages. I'm not sure how best to stop that. I think it's good for buyers and sellers to be able to have free access of the livestock, but not sure how to keep unattended children away.

Carla I agree about the kids when I was showing that woman your guienas her granddaugter asked to hold one I told her NO because they did not belong to her, or to me for that matter there was a couple of really young kids 2 and 3 running around with no supervision. I do take my kids with me sometime, however they know they are not allowed to touch any animal and they know I had better not have to turn around to see them they should always be in front of me. I think Misti may take this up at the next auction with some of the parents she actually knew a couple of them that were letting their kids run amuck, but she was busy watching tickets and what went out the door.

Hi everyone. My wife and I live outside of McAlester. We have raised all kinds of livestock over the years, but right now we are down to mostly chickens. My favorites are dark RIR's. We have a few doms, and barred rocks. I have sold at Maud several times, and have also sold at Inola. In fact, we sold a bunch of barred rock roosters and pullets last week at Inola. I enjoy reading all the posts, so I thought I would join up. Thanks.
