When you look at the header of the ad, it says $15 per bird.

I also just called the gentleman who had the chicks for sale in Hulbert and they are anywhere from 1-2 weeks old. He is asking $2 per check and has about 20 of them, but I have no way of sexing them and he said he doesn't either, at that age. I really wouldn't want to purchase them and wind up with a lot of roosters that I couldn't use. Other than that, it would be a good deal.

You have many different options to get rid of the extra roo's, and then it will still be a good deal, hang in there Man as you can see we are willing to help you find good stock.

I thought of that as well, al6517, but there seem to be no Black Australorp breeders on BYC. I found one in Oklahoma, but his profile said he was banned. Also, as much as I would like to have chicks from a breeder, they may very well be out of my price range.

LOL heheheheee LD hey folks looks like LD found MM's old site.

LD perhaps you could gett a few dozen breeder quality hatching egg's and we could hatch them for you, then you could get away pretty cheap. I think almost 90% of hatch and hatch alot. We could always make room in incubators for a newby's egg's. Give it some thought. The fact is you will be so much happier and prouder of them.

You have found a wonderful group of folks who either live in Oklahoma or wish they lived in Oklahoma

I see from more recent posts that we are already trying to enable you in the acquisition of Black Australorp chicks.

Although hatchery chicks may be more expensive than some available locally, the hatchery does have the ability to vent sex the chicks at hatch, with about a 95% accuracy - which has the opportunity to be less expensive than feeding a bunch of roos until you can tell the gender. The other "advantage" of hatchery chicks is that you pay postage but in this day of skyrocketing gasoline prices, that may be less expensive than traveling very far to get chicks.

Squash bugs? Is that why I can't seem to grow squash here? In Michigan zucchini is like a weed. You have to check the plants every day or they get huge. You can see them grow. There are so productive that everyone drops them on their neighbors porches and then ring the door bell and run!
I was begining to think I'd lost my green thumb here when all my squash plant die every year. Any hints to keep them growing?

No you've not lost your green thumb. Good information found here:
http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/horticulture/M1208.html

One thing I do is water with a spray hose at the base of the plant. The bugs climb up the stems to get away from the water. I quickly squash them...they stink like a stinkbug so wear gloves.
Eggs are found on the undersides of leaves. With a pocket knife, I cut out the little section the eggs are on and then destroy the eggs. I don't want any eggs falling into the soil around the plants...I think squash bugs will live thru a nuclear attack just like cockroaches....

Vine borers can also damage a squash plant. Your leaves will appear to wilt. Examine the lower stems for bug frase...make a slit in the stem, remove the worm and then cover the cut with dirt.

Thank you for the info.! I have used DE around my strawberry plants to stop pill bugs ( I think they are called rolly polly bugs here).

You can buy chicks that are sexeds, I got some pullets from ccackle a couple years ago.
And they are pretty good birds.
Best option for you is to do what feels right for you.

JMHO from reading all the other post on this matter
