Had to do an emergency round-up of my chickens today because this horrible weather picked up our rather large metal building and put it in the alley over a 4 foot fence. I could just imagine what it could have done to one of my 11 wk old free ranging chickens. P.S. the building didn't survive but all the chickens did.

Cold and wet here too!

Ok I said I wouldn't complain about the rain but this cold has got to go!

Sooner,
Would a tray of vegtables and dip be a good addition to the potluck? or what about a big bowl of coleslaw?? I have a good coleslaw recipe that has a vinegar dressing with a little sugar and celery seed; no mayonaise to spoil sitting out on the table. I will make two styles of potato salad since I seem to be the only one that is making it and some people like mustard style and others not so much. Let me know what I can bring.
MJ
Silly me - I meant to send this message in a PM - maybe it is time for me to go to bed!

yep...we don't have any dry wood to burn

guess we'll have to break out the space heater...

says its gonna be 38 tomorow nite??? ok, so i have some chicks i just moved to the coop- what is too cold for month olds??

I moved my month olds back into the garage tonight (and covered up the annuals that I just planted), but I am an "ole mother hen" when it comes to my chicks and esp. since I lost 12 chicks last week.
I hope this next week will be a better week for chickens in Jack's and my neighborhood!

MJ

I like the way you think MJ in regards to the slaw not needing Mayo for convienance, I like Mustard PS LOL.
I was talking to Jack at Fletcher last night and your name came up, actually we started the conversation with you LOL. He thinks your the shizzle for helping him this winter with his birds in all that snow, and he mentioned how much fun he is having tutoring you and your Foo-Foo chicken habit. he feels as bad as you about your rooster loss, but the upcoming hatch should set you back right.

No you've not lost your green thumb. Good information found here:
http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/horticulture/M1208.html

One thing I do is water with a spray hose at the base of the plant. The bugs climb up the stems to get away from the water. I quickly squash them...they stink like a stinkbug so wear gloves.
Eggs are found on the undersides of leaves. With a pocket knife, I cut out the little section the eggs are on and then destroy the eggs. I don't want any eggs falling into the soil around the plants...I think squash bugs will live thru a nuclear attack just like cockroaches....

Vine borers can also damage a squash plant. Your leaves will appear to wilt. Examine the lower stems for bug frase...make a slit in the stem, remove the worm and then cover the cut with dirt.

Thank you for the info.! I have used DE around my strawberry plants to stop pill bugs ( I think they are called rolly polly bugs here).

I think the white powder mold stuff is more obnoxious then the bugs. Any nontoxic advice for that (not listerine, tried that it didn't work)

A flock of BAs is a beautiful sight. The roos can be quite impressive. My neighbor had a flock of nearly 50. I have always loved animals but being around those birds was the was how I first noticed that chickens can be so beautiful.
