Good Morning all our Okie friends.
Who plans to attend Blanchard this evening? It will be nice to get out of the house for a while..

sixshooter, You need to get the brooder finished so all of us can help you fill it.
What are you looking for good layers, heavy meaties, dual purpose, quality bantams?
Give us an idea as to what you have in mind so we can all start lining them up for you,, that is one of our favorite things to do is enable others and feed a solid poultry addiction.

good morning all, Im in complete shock right now and need help with a something. I went out to take care of the chickens and noticed a few birds that I had pend up were out runnin free in the barn, so I ran over to the pens to check em out and there were large holes ripped through the wire. What confuses me is none of them were killed or missing. The only enterence is over a 5' door or through the wire that surrounds the barn. There werent any other wholes in the wire at ground level so Im assuming it had to go over the door. There is an opening above the door but I have wire going from right above the door up a couple of feet to the top. So the only way it could have got in was over the door between the wire. What the heck kind of animal would have gone through the trouble to get to them and not killd any?????? It is only chicken wire but the wholes were about a ft. in diameter. I am out on the country a bit and im sure there are bobcats and that was my first thought but it didnt kill any. Im in

The cluck ladies are lined up on an outside roost in a corner of their run today. They are quite pretty - all different colors of new feathers after their recent molt, with bright combs and wattles that are a nice contrast against the snowy background.

When I go outside they all start hollering at me to come over and visit. But when I get there they just gripe loudly about the weather and the nasty wet snow in their run. This peppered with quite a bit of "You'll never Believe what SHE did" and not just a little of "I am SO SICK of that Fat Red Nest Hog," so the conversation is not as pleasant as usual.

I say "Language, Ladies...can we please keep a courteous tone?" but their complaints drown out my pleas for civility. They pay no attention to my instruction and continue to moan about the cold and snow and crowded conditions in the coop. All I can do is apologize and throw them some scratch.

I am so glad none of your chickens were killed. From the description of the damage, I would guess a raccoon tore through the wire. They climb well and are very strong - it takes quite a bit to keep them out of something if they really want in. Perhaps it was frightened away before it could catch any birds...you are very fortunate. I suggest you reinforce your chicken wire with heavy chain link and/or hardware cloth.

Also, a warning/reminder to those who free range during the day - raccoons and foxes may come out during the day if the chickens are out of the run - I lost a bird during the day a couple of years ago to a varmint (I think raccoon) that jumped over the 4' chain link fence and came into the yard during daylight hours when my chickens were free-ranging in the snow.

Thanks city. That was what I was thinking. The only animal that has the ability to climb and the strength to break through the wire. I just dont understand y it didnt kill any, but very happy it didnt. The birds I had caged were all bantams; a cochin pair, buff rock trio, mille fleur duccle pair, a little frizzled roo, and a blue americana hen. I was sweatin bullets when I saw them out. Scared to see what had been killed. Much relief now, but I gotta get that predator outa here.
