m.ruzycki :

good morning all, Im in complete shock right now and need help with a something. I went out to take care of the chickens and noticed a few birds that I had pend up were out runnin free in the barn, so I ran over to the pens to check em out and there were large holes ripped through the wire. What confuses me is none of them were killed or missing. The only enterence is over a 5' door or through the wire that surrounds the barn. There werent any other wholes in the wire at ground level so Im assuming it had to go over the door. There is an opening above the door but I have wire going from right above the door up a couple of feet to the top. So the only way it could have got in was over the door between the wire. What the heck kind of animal would have gone through the trouble to get to them and not killd any?????? It is only chicken wire but the wholes were about a ft. in diameter. I am out on the country a bit and im sure there are bobcats and that was my first thought but it didnt kill any. Im in

My lab did that to our coop a couple times until we put hard wire on it. She left the chickens alone, she was going for the scraps we put in the coop.

You are right Joe! Most of my birds are production stock, which I find quite satisfactory for my egg production needs. The white ones are Easter Eggers, and I have one Dark Cornish hen.
You'll notice a Cuckoo Marans and Blue Marans in the second photo (another shot of a Blue Marans in the 3rd pic) - those I got from Poco Pollo, and I heartily recommend her stock to anyone looking for healthy, purebred birds of good quality.

I have noticed that although the Cuckoo coloring is black and white very like the Barred Rocks, the Cuckoo pattern is more muddled. I don't know if that is a common characteristic or just the way my chickens are, but I appreciate that it helps me tell them apart!

Thanks.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. We've lost one guinea so far this winter as well. Poor things, didn't have sense enough to go into the coop, just sat in the blizzard hunkered down by a fence and got their poor little heads all covered with snow and ice. 6 of them we got to in time, the 7th evidently got ice over her nostrils and suffocated. Poor thing! The other 6 did too but evidently didn't chill as quickly as the 7th, we got the ice off of them and warmed them up and put them into the coop for the duration. Poor birds!

It is bright outside and I'm looking forward to warmer temperatures and the snow melting away.

I have a hockey game tonight - and during the first intermission a couple is getting married on the ice! If I had known such great Wedding Ceremony locations as "Center Ice during a Minor League Hockey Game" were available, I may have gotten married more often! Hmmm....now that I think about it, maybe I'll look into having my next wedding between the "Antique Pistol Display" and a "Reloading Supplies" table at one of the many upcoming Gun and Knife Shows...

The auction is 1 mile south of US 62 on countyline rd. It is on east side of countyline. 5:00 PM

Beth - Your girls are so pretty, so photogenic. Cuckoo Marans have to be called cuckoo because their feathers aren't a true barred pattern. You'll see irregular spaces and areas where the dark and light cross on a Cuckoo Maran. Look at your Barred Rock hen and you'll see she has a true barred pattern where the bars are distinct and unbroken.

What gun show you headed for? I was going to place an order with Cabela's next weekend, but now I'm thinking I might as well shop locally. We're hankerin for another varmint rifle. Maybe a nice scope, too. We've got two guardian donkeys out in the back pasture, so we haven't heard coyotes, but we're seeing tracks and are concerned that they are just becoming sneakier.

Our new snow plow ran out of fuel. Had had to feed the darned thing in the middle of the day because her tummy growled loud enough for me to hear it.

How about a POOPS wedding?

This year is my wifes and I 10 yr anniversary in March. Do you think if I do a renewing of our vows at POOPS would be a good present to her.
