Did you know there is a feed store by Shulter/Coalton? I don't know if they are open on Sundays though.
I haven't been down there to look for feed yet. I think I saw a feed store once in Mounds, which isn't far from where I live. The real trouble is finding one that carries game bird starter. It is getting hard to balance the cost of cheaper feed against the cost of the gas to go get it, and we don't have any place to store it in bulk were I wouldn't be paranoid about mold getting to it. Since I've been watching feed prices creeping higher, I've been eyeing open spots on the property that I could grow extra grains on. We'll have to see how my gardening skills hold up this season and maybe I'll start researching what grains would help supplement their feed the best. My carnivorous little quail are going to need extra protein, so I'll probably start raising batches of bugs for them to chow down on. Bil and I had talked about raising mealworms before, back when we had archer fish, and it seemed pretty straightforward.
The feed store I was talking about carries game bird start from purina and shawnee, both are right at $15.00 but the shawnee one they would need to know in advance b/c they don't keep it in stock, they are not open on Sun, but are all other days until 6pm through the week and 3pm on Sat.
Oh I almost forgot the feed stores phone number is 652-0474
I am growing insects for the girls too. I have a growing colony of b. dupia roaches right now and have gathered most of the parts to make my own type of "biopod" for raising black soldier fly larva. I'm hoping to raise enough through the growing season to freeze through the winter, but that is also where my b. dupia fit in, I was only going to feed those through the winter and allow the colony to grow through the summer, since you can't grow bsf "artificially" as far as environment. I have access to plenty of calories in restaurant scraps from one of my SIL's rest. So hopefully w/ some insects for protien and garden scraps I'll be mostly self sufficient w/ their food by later this year into next year.
