Did you know there is a feed store by Shulter/Coalton? I don't know if they are open on Sundays though.

I haven't been down there to look for feed yet. I think I saw a feed store once in Mounds, which isn't far from where I live. The real trouble is finding one that carries game bird starter. It is getting hard to balance the cost of cheaper feed against the cost of the gas to go get it, and we don't have any place to store it in bulk were I wouldn't be paranoid about mold getting to it. Since I've been watching feed prices creeping higher, I've been eyeing open spots on the property that I could grow extra grains on. We'll have to see how my gardening skills hold up this season and maybe I'll start researching what grains would help supplement their feed the best. My carnivorous little quail are going to need extra protein, so I'll probably start raising batches of bugs for them to chow down on. Bil and I had talked about raising mealworms before, back when we had archer fish, and it seemed pretty straightforward.

The feed store I was talking about carries game bird start from purina and shawnee, both are right at $15.00 but the shawnee one they would need to know in advance b/c they don't keep it in stock, they are not open on Sun, but are all other days until 6pm through the week and 3pm on Sat.

Oh I almost forgot the feed stores phone number is 652-0474

I am growing insects for the girls too. I have a growing colony of b. dupia roaches right now and have gathered most of the parts to make my own type of "biopod" for raising black soldier fly larva. I'm hoping to raise enough through the growing season to freeze through the winter, but that is also where my b. dupia fit in, I was only going to feed those through the winter and allow the colony to grow through the summer, since you can't grow bsf "artificially" as far as environment. I have access to plenty of calories in restaurant scraps from one of my SIL's rest. So hopefully w/ some insects for protien and garden scraps I'll be mostly self sufficient w/ their food by later this year into next year.

If you can figure how many bags you use a month, and figure only 1 trip rather than 4 locally it should still make a considerable difference. I know I will have to pick up all 5 tons at once and distribute quickly as I can only store so many.

Hey all................... Been checking out my hatch this morning, going very well so far, just a few more left and they are working on it. How is everybody.

too far for me darnit.

Question for local predator experts, what if anything gets through 1 x 1/2 wire, like for rabbit cage bottoms? 1/2 x 1/2 hardware cloth doesn't let enough poo through and ends up a nightmare to clean.

okiepony, looks like a good thing NBC found her for your friend. I just spent my break time chatting with my Sendai friend online and he doesn't know her. Sendai is a city of over 1 million people, so the chances were slim to start with.

But he did say he wished NBC would find him! Always a sense of humor, that guy, no matter the situation. But make no mistake, he is very sad about what is going on around him in his area.

Also, weird on my end talking online to someone who is right in the middle of all this. He wants everyone to know most of Japan (and indeed Sendai) is just fine and not leveled or inundated with water.

1x1/2 welded wire would suffice for most critters, raccoons are virtually impossible to keep out once they set thier minds to things as they can manipulate latches as well. The only predator that may get through the 1 x 1/2 welded wire would be a rat snake and it would not be able to get out once it has eaten anything. For the sides 1 inch poultry wire works well for the sides just get a good quality wire not the cheap stuff that pulls apart easily.
