Yesterday evening I talked to NNbreeder - a/k/a Dr. Les. He is still in the hospital and awaiting the results of the biopsy on the tumors on his spine. He is in good spirits, but bored silly. If any of you have been wanting to visit with him about some breeding project you are considering or about nutrition or health issues in your flock (or about goats, horses, diesel engines, plumbing, etc.) send me a PM and I will give you the direct phone number to his room.

In talking to him, I learned that I shouldn't give turnips to goats or sheep until after the frost has hit them or the turnips will have too much nitrogen in them and that chickens probably won't eat mustard greens (we discussed my plans for a garden that will have critter treats included). I also learned that I can add 3/8 inch pelleted alfalfa to my layer feed to increase the protein.

I tried to call this afternoon and see what I could find out. Since Marie retired, two other people have picked up her job responsibilities in addition to their prior responsibilties, and Marie's position won't be filled due to budget cuts. Both of those individuals are out of the office today.

Firefighter1042 has signed up to take the class to be a certified NPIP tester and told me that the class will be in May this year. (it has usually been in June)

I have a call in to the tester who came out earlier this month and tested my birds and when I find something out - I will post it.

Grace's Dad - We'll see you at POOPS, right? I want to be able to put a face to the screen name. Yes, Victoria is a worker. I praise her for helping with house, barn, and yard chores. She is still in the "I love just being here" part of her life. I hope she can skip the "Life sucks... everything is a waste of time," part of life so many teens go through. My classes are populated with a smattering of dark-mood wannabees. I smile them into working most days. They aren't so dark when they get their minds and fingers moving.

Good afternoon, Okie-Homeys. I have completed some of the things I needed to get done today and now am about to starting working on others.

Poco Pollo - I found a great place for us to meet Saturday - sent you a PM.

I hope everyone is outside enjoying the day - it is beautiful!

I've been working in the garden all day, starting out sooooo far behind. But my master plan is long term, so one season later then I planned won't be to horrible in the grand scheme of things. I had thought the girls would eat all the grass and dig it up during the couple of months they were in the garden before the start of the season, but there is as much grass as when I put them in.

I also cleaned out the roach bin today, and gave the girls their first taste of roaches, it was such a hit, you would have thought I was throwing crack down in a crack house the way they went wild. They won't be getting anymore for a while since that is going to be their winter protien source.

I didn't get a chance to start the soldier fly larva bin yet, but I may work on that this evening.

Or, you need more chickens for the space you were trying to clear out.

Soo... what'cha looking for?

I figured out a little to late I should have confined them to the smaller space. That was always going to be the plan when the growing season started, smaller rotaing runs. That is what I've been working on the fencing and getting the virgin garden spots ready, I'm just a lot more behind then I had planned on. As for more chickens, I would love it, but I'm in town so don't want to make to many waves and get what I have taken.

I have EE's now, and I have been smitten by they very friendly, unique looking bearded ladies, and their beautiful blue and green eggs, and can't even imagine a more perfect chicken for what I want.

Update on NNbreeder/Les - he is scheduled for surgery tomorrow to remove the tumors along his spine and fuse 3 vertebrae. He said to tell everyone hello and that he plans to be up and going by May 14.
