Lovebirds hatch 5 or 6 in a brood and it takes 18 months for a bird to pair and breed....and it may be several breedings . A hen can brood three clutches in two years. Then only 1 or 2 may be worth taking to the next pairing.
At least chickens are edible.

if you are to keep you breeding program a good one the one must always cull verry strikly and never breed a bird that shows unwanted traits and just because the birds are show Q dose not mean that all the ofspring will be you still have to cull haevily

How old are they before you should decide which ones to cull?

Sometimes you can cull right away, then some you have to let mature a little, but all in all you never really know until it is grown if its going to be good enough to use. the idea is to have as few flaws as possible so you have something to work with.
