Put down extra shavings in the coop and broke down and bought another heated waterer. Some how we managed to lose the 2 we bought last year.

Morning everyone, I have been busy this morning watching the electric companies tree people trim my trees, I wanted the new growth taken off.. But I didn't want the area clear cut... They did a pretty good job, would have been better if they hadn't hit my gate while they were backing in.

oh well not much damage just adjustment to the hinge.. But still it's the idea.
Everyone seems to be settled in the new thread. So onward and upward, and let the good times roll.

Things I have done:

Added extra hay/shavings for deep litter in all coops
Closed (at least) three sides to all small cages
added feed sacks & hay to any cage that is off the ground to stop some air flow
Cookie tin heaters for all gallon water's so there is no frozen water.
Feed scratch in the morning & evening.

**in the ice like they are talking about I will move feed inside the coop so they can stay in if they want.


In the year that we went 14days without electric, I never lost a bird. Yes a few got some frost bite on their combs but there wasn't much I could do about it.

Just my 2 cents.

What I like is when I can look in that window and see as they come out and dry, then I begin to ID them. These WLR's chicks Are a briliant silver white so the bold feather lacing will be promanant and good bright defined lacing on the breast. Not a blurry rush of red and stained white, like you'll find in the jubilee variety. It is still a little early for me to inspect to see if I have some pearl eye's in this bunch but my guess yeah, Plenty. As they go in the brooder tomorrow they will be vent sexed and tagged as such.

That second pic looks like a muscle man in a competition when they do the pose turing around and showing off the muscles in their backs and shoulders.
