Beth - Neat coop. It's the kind of coop chickens have to get on a waiting list to live in. Very uptown

Anyone notice how shovels get heavier as they get colder? Seems mine weighs about 50 lbs. now. I'm going to let it warm up so I can lift it again.

Diagonal snow still coming down. I am going to wait awhile before going out to check on critters. Hopefully, the chickens that roost outdoors had the sense to go into shelter sometime before the snow began last night.

Watching TV, they just threw a cup of hot water into the air and at 9 degrees and it came down as snow. Maybe if I get out later, I will try that just to see what it looks like.

My phone keeps ringing - so much for sleeping in.

Hey, because of you, Gerald went to the Goldsby Community Center last July and the VFW guys helped him start the process for service related disability. He finally got a letter in the mail on Monday .... he is now rated 10% disability for tinnitus! Thank you Keith, for guiding him to those fabulous veterans!

Hi everyone!

I need to get back outside & check on all our critters, but the snow drifts and strong winds are brutal.

Some folks were buying smaller shovels yesterday, the kind you use to plant trees with, when the snow shovels ran out at the stores. As the TV announcer said, that may actually be an advantage since snow shovels can pick up a heavy load of snow and a smaller shovel can't pick up as much at one time, but may be more manageable. I moved the garden shovel yesterday and put it where I can get to it easily, along with the grain shovel. I think that the smaller shovel may be the way to go later this afternoon, when I try to take fresh water to the chicken yard. I will need it to dig out the gate.

I am hoping my chickens survive this!! They are at our land about 3 miles from our house, i locked them in the coop last night with plenty of food and water. no electricity out there at all, and i so i put the deep litter all around the black rubber water bowl hoping to insulate it. i definitely won't be able to get to them to give them fresh water until at least wednesday afternoon at the earliest. there is enough water to last that long, i am just worried about it freezing over too hard to wehre they can't peck a hole in it

Vashi measured 8 1/2" in our long driveway a bit ago, and it is coming down hard and diagonally. The upside is that it's not sticking to power lines or hardwood trees! Haven't been out to check on the poultry yet. I'm dreading the possibility of having to dig out access to six outer doors and maybe a lot more inner coop doors than that--18 -20 if much snow has blown inside their pens. Most have feed and water inside their coops, but the water will be frozen by now. The heated dog dishes are outside the coops, so they won't have water until I release them.

News just now said we're expecting another 4 to 6". Oh boy.

Vashi isn't expecting to get to go to work until this weekend, as we have alot of long, steep hills between us and his shop. He'll be getting pretty antsy by then.

I cooked a bit pot of Navy beans with a ham bone yesterday!

Haven't thought about it much, I expect there could be some very interesting birds come from this cross, Maybe some big (as in bird size} good egg layers, If I'm lucky maybe BBS colored with the Brahma hackle. I really thought they would be good for a test run on bator.

That's kind of what I was thinking, maybe some lacing in their hackles thats blue, They should be big but will fill out late as nice big laying hen's, go to about 14 mo and they will be fat big Ole layers.

The Light Brahma is still one of my all time favorite breed, I used to have some. Sold em, I think Blanchard this past summer.

AL

I bought a very good looking roo (wife calls him Romeo) and a hen and pullet from you last summer.
