Good job but next time, leave the hens inside and put the straw on your sidewalk.
It will save you a lot of work.

Dead silence this morning had me worried. We usually hear crowing from all directions long before sunup, but nothing this morning. Waited til it warmed up some before I went out, so it was around 11; still dead silence from the pens. Was very much afraid of what I'd find.

However, as soon as they heard me, they started crowing from all quarters. Every pen has at least 3" of snow in it, and all the waterers except the heated dog dishes were frozen solid; even the ones inside the coops. The two guinea waterers, which are the small rubber bowls were frozen so solid I couldn't even stomp the ice out! NO losses at all so far! Everyone seems to be completely OK.

The silkies in three pens weren't venturing out of their cozy coops the two or three feet over the snow to get to their heated waterers, so I spread chips over it. Hope they'll take advantage of that.

In the meantime, the eggs that I'm incubating for a friend have started to hatch. New life is always breathtaking; and especially so in weather like this!

So I thawed the eggs and ate them for lunch! Yum they were so good. It has been a while since I have had fresh eggs. What a difference!

My 13 yr daughter is driving me nuts though! She is so bored. The rest are keeping occupied, but this little one is spazzing! Help, anyone with a 4x4 that needs a 13 yr old helper for the day lol!

MY 17 yr old flew the coop! He has a friend with a 4x4 that made it down our street and is off to get a few essentials and hang with his friends. Lucky him. I tried but he would not take me with him! Sigh.

We are on the go kind of people and one day was a great break, 2 is a little much. We may all be insane by tomorrow. Hope the chicks hatch tomorrow, that will break up the boredom!

What a relief! I sure would be nervous if i didn't hear them either! Maybe they were just too cozy and didn't want to exert the effort!

i am currently baking bread- all that talk yesterday! i discovered my bread machine has a dough setting, so its kneading, then i bake it...

DH decided he had to go to the mailbox. Actually, he wanted to check the road that leads to pavement. He thought he would drive to work tomorrow if everything looked good. He managed to get half way down the driveway before the Dodge (4WD) became lodged in waist-deep snow. It's not going to move until (1) the snow melts, (2) the 1/4 mile drive is shoveled, or (3) the snow melts. No mail in the mail box, by the way. Our postal carriers probably can't get through the drifts either.

No thanks needed, I found it here on the BYC & it works great! I used them all last year & this year.

Note to self, don't let DH turn the breaker off that make them work! He did that because they were still plugged into the old house! LOL.

Hey there everyone! Well I am happy to report that everything (livestock, chickens, pigs, barn cats) has made it through so far. Like Betsy things were so quiet this morning I was so afraid of what I would find but when I went out there they were just fine...looked better than yesterday but still everything looked miserable. Unfortuneately it looks like the well house is frozen that supplys water to the calves we have in the weaning pen up the hill so the guys are working on that today...but the water here at the house and barns is ok for now....but it runs off a seperate well.

Looks like the tarps, and thrown together temporary coop with straw for the chickens seems to have at least kept them sheltered and alive. I have heat lamps out there but with temps the way they are I doubt they do much good.

We are completely snowed in here. The rural road we live on is one huge snow drift and they don't plow out here. there is a Semi truck stuck on my road for some reason and there are 6 foot drifts surrounding it. The driver is still in there with the truck running...the sherriff came out to get him but the stupid guy would not leave. Oh well...can't cure stupid. It will be days before we can get out of here and by then they are saying another snow storm is coming on Sun or Monday...so he better be prepared to stay awhile in his truck LOL.

Hope everyone is ok and well.
