I was cleaning out my EE's little coop today and found that one had lain her first egg, a very pretty green one. Unfortunately I broke it before I realized it was there.

I wasn't expecting them to lay for a while yet, so it was a nice surprise. I just hope she does it again soon and I manage to keep it in one piece.

They have the run of the place during the day and spend alot of time hanging out under the quail coop dust bathing. I just hope they don't decide to make a nest under it because I don't want to have to try to extract eggs out from under there. I think one of them believes that she's a dog or something because I watched her chase a squirrel across the yard until it ran up a tree to get away from her. She did not appreciate it being in "her" territory, I guess.

I have another young EE pullet that I will be adding to the mix when she gets just a little bigger and some more EE eggs on their way to me. I have one incubator dusted off and warming up and the others are calling my name from upstairs. There's just something about those little bearded faces...

now I just need to find the guesses to see who was closest - I was organizing them into a list before the laptop decided to go wonky. (the good news was that the laptop was still under warranty and I didn't even realize it had a warranty

That magic number certainly didn't take as long as I initially thought it would, to attain.

I had opened this in a new tab to post that you had used the "Teach method of incubation" so was really laughing when I saw that City beat me in drawing the same conclusion.

We all may want to be careful what we post about letting our dogs kill predators .... some guy in Michigan was charged with animal cruelty for allowing his dog to kill a raccoon

...is right! What the H??!!

But fortunately for me, I don't "let" them. I'm not sure I could STOP them. Sure didn't take them no two minutes, though. 130 pound dog against a 10 pound possum isn't much of a match.

Although I have stopped them a couple of times and shot the thing, more to protect my dogs from the stray bite from a possibly diseased animal than anything.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. Gerald had to finish a possum off about a month ago that our dogs thought they took care of ... but it was just playing possum. I'm worried about the skunks & coyotes and possibility of rabies around us. Years ago, we had a skunk in broad daylight come up & charge at my Dad & me ... so it was most likely rabid. It's definitely good to have a loaded shotgun handy

I also now have my 38 revolver loaded with varmint shot.

Went to the Harrah auction this evening. More folks were there and RIR hens were going for about $14. Other breeds of hens went for $12-13. Large roosters were going for $7-9. Bought another live trap. Just need to get enough of those set that all the possums and skunks getting ready to start visiting are easily discouraged.

Who is going to Fletcher tomorrow night (besides Michael D, Teach, Barnswallow, Al, and me?)
Michael D sent me a text today that someone he knows, plans to take standard size Blue and Black cochins, blue Wyandottes, and some peacocks of unusual colors. Do you think I should send a text message to Muesky that peacocks may make an appearance in Fletcher tomorrow?

I finally got some chicks. I have 2 production reds, 2 Easter eggers, 1 buff orpington and 1 Jersey Giant. They are so cute. I was going to wait but we found a great deal on roofing material, so yeah I'm now a chicken momma.
