Did you know there is a feed store by Shulter/Coalton? I don't know if they are open on Sundays though.

I haven't been down there to look for feed yet. I think I saw a feed store once in Mounds, which isn't far from where I live. The real trouble is finding one that carries game bird starter. It is getting hard to balance the cost of cheaper feed against the cost of the gas to go get it, and we don't have any place to store it in bulk were I wouldn't be paranoid about mold getting to it. Since I've been watching feed prices creeping higher, I've been eyeing open spots on the property that I could grow extra grains on. We'll have to see how my gardening skills hold up this season and maybe I'll start researching what grains would help supplement their feed the best. My carnivorous little quail are going to need extra protein, so I'll probably start raising batches of bugs for them to chow down on. Bil and I had talked about raising mealworms before, back when we had archer fish, and it seemed pretty straightforward.

Chambers Feed Mill used to be in Mounds but Iam not sure it is still open. It has been a few years since I have been in that town.

what breed of chicken is worth 100 bucks a head?

and joe, i have 50-100 show poultry in the pens right now, didnt give much for anyof them. have won shows and placed with 5 dollar birds from the auction.

i never laugh at people that buy birds, or at least not the ones that dont pay ridiculous prices for them.

and no i dont look for production birds, i get them in trades sometimes, but i dont look for them or realy even want them.

your hen/ cock rate is fantastic! how do you do it?

Since we are talking about How much you pay for birds. I guess I am a real push over. I got lots of 100 dollar bills tied up in birds. and I am very happy with everyone of them. Not to mention Some are rare and endangered Man wish I could have found some of them for 5 dollars. I will admit Alot of chciken owners have tried to hustle me Expecially cornish breeders who wanted 300-600 for pairs and trio's I just laugh at those kind of people. But 100 dollars for a good show quality bird isnt bad. Pappy use to say you get what you pay for.

mefordz you must have missed the postings a few weeks ago about the pair of birds selling for

.................. $900 and the auction wasn't even finished!!!!! I am happy w/ my little hatchery EE's, but all I wanted was pretty eggs and pretty gardeners, but the sky is the limit if your taste runs more towards the exotic, or rare. It's the same w/ any other animal even dogs, you can get a good mutt for free, but your going to pay thousands for a good show quality english bull. (and they just give you dog poop, not eggs!!!

)

Besides had you ever considered if you buy a pair or trio of chickens for high price, their offspring or eggs will likely sell for high price also? (sorry banjoe if I gave away a secret)

I've discovered that if I hatch my own eggs, I get about 50-50 hens and roos. But if I buy chicks from someone else I get waaaaaaaaaaaaay more roos.

ETA: I think I managed to pick two hens and two roos out of the mixed bantam bin at Atwoods. If I'd let the guy catching them choose, I'm sure they would have been all roos.
