Robin - your "community nest box" probably won't work well because the hens like the feeling of privacy they can get in a tight fitting nest. You might consider hanging something over most of the length of the community nest box so that it is dark inside - and that might work to give them "privacy"

Mine must still be in that teen girl stage where they have to go to the bathroom in groups b/c they will bunch up 2 or 3 to a box sitting on each other when there are open and available boxes all around.

I have a 10 hole nest box in the coop. Some of the boxes typically have no eggs, while others will have 3 or 4.. . . and it is fairly consistent which boxes are the favorites - the ones closest to the corner of the coop, where they are facing the back of the open door and don't have a clear view across the entire coop - are the ones that attract the most business. In another coop, some prefer to lay them on the ground inside an A-frame shelter - but closest to the end that has a cage blocking the opening.

My Hens Have A Favorite Nest Hole As Well. Sometimes I Will Go And Check On Them And There Will Be 2 Hens In The Same Hole At The Same Time~

Morning all, so what's on the genda for day? (Other than going to Fletcher of course) Wish we could make it. It's our middle son's 15th B-Day today so we get do as he wants which includes having the GF over so we will not be leaving..
I am going to post some of our Standard Black Cochin breeders on CL if anyone is interetsed it will be 1 rooster and 3 hens all good proven breeders.

Have a great day all and hope so see you soon.

I have a question best answered by my knowledgeable okie neighbors!

A month ago, my 10 week old pullet, Duchess, a beautiful coronation sussex, mysteriously died inside the coop. No blood, no feathers, no signs of illness. Not one. I had taken pictures of all the chickens the day before and she was eating, strutting, looked healthy with no discharge or eye problems. She was eating, she looked beautiful....you get the picture. Since she died, not one other chicken (7 of them) has had a problem.

It's been bothering me. (I guess I should have had an autopsy done.) But, all I can think of is that the darn heat lamp (unplugged of course) fell on her. While she was stiff, he neck was still limp. My other guess is that she ate something poisonous. Since I have small children & a very small dog, I'm not in the habit of keeping poisonous chemicals hanging around. Of course, there's always the possibility she found some speck of fertilizer or insecticide, but I'm thinking it might be something naturally growing.

I have found that long list of toxic plants for chickens, but not all of them grow here in Oklahoma. Thought somebody might be able to tell me what I need to look out for. I keep toxic plants like daffodils and tulips, etc and all the chickens free range from time to time. Also, I think I have seen some clover and creeping charlie weeds. Could those be lethal to a chicken? Is there another weed common to Oklahoma that is lethal to chickens?

Sure would love your input & advice. Thanks!!!

Popping in and out again...

Poco - I am confident I can find our meeting place and will see you in a couple of hours - thanks for the excellent directions.

Titania - All of us have probably had a perfectly healthy looking/acting bird drop dead of apparently no reason. Your setup sounds just fine - did you indeed find the lamp fallen over? Sometimes birds "just die" and we never find out why - I know I'm no help, but I am sorry for your loss.

P&B - If you find where one could send a note to Les & Teva, I'd like to have that info...
