How awful! Prayers that the MIA turn up soon!

Our dogs are the opposite end of the spectrum - they PROTECT the chickens, consider them their own flock and will not let predators of any kind anywhere near them. I am so thankful for those old mangy cast-off strays!! Yep, we adopt many of the strays that people dump, and they do turn out to be some of the best dogs!

I won't own another dog that kills chickens but I have kids that don't understand that. My male was a puppy when we got him & didn't have chickens. I am pretty sure that the next one will be the kind that POCO, NNbreeder & Buster have. So mad I can't think of the name.

Well we have Komondors and the main difference in the other breeds is that they do not run around the perimeter all night and bark plus they won't be drawn away from those they protect.

We introduced them to the goats the other day and the boys kept between them and the fence and as usual when they layed down one was pointed one way and one was pointed the other way. I need to get updated pics of them. Both boys can get their mouths around my upper thigh

They are the longer haired ones too. It will be a while before I can get one.

how do you handle the dreadlocks?

We are just going to shave them every spring for their comfort.

Where they are originally from that is part of their effectiveness as their coats pick up sticks and grass just like the sheep they are guarding does so when wolves come into the flock they don't stand out like an odd colored dog would.

But I would like to see them dred out one time. And they have an inner eyelid that protects the eye from getting scratched from the exta hair. It kinda looks creepy.

Greetings!

I live in Beggs, OK. We have a 20 acre farm (I'm a college student, but living with my parents) and raise, Boer and Nubian goats, and poultry. Right now we have adult breeding pens of Sumatra and Black Javan, Brown Chinese and Embden Geese and Ancona and Crested Mutt Ducks and I'm looking for a Roo for my lonely Light Brahma girls, and a drake for a Rouen Duck. We also have....tons... of chicks in pure breeds, Wellsummer, Maran, Buff, Sumatra (from ours!!), Delaware, White Americana, Cochin and more. And Silkie, and Coronation Sussex eggs in the incubator (and tons more, lol).

Great to see so many Okies on BYC

That is awesome, my uncle in arkansas has sheep, and he keeps a couple komondors...I am going to get a good LGD but it will have ot be after I get a big fenced in area put together, we have some people that live close that dont seem to respect property rights, and I dont want to get sued from my dog attacking someone that gets too close to the chickens....my mother used to raise newfoundlands, so I have a good idea how much work it would be to keep them trimmed/shaved...
