Well we have Komondors and the main difference in the other breeds is that they do not run around the perimeter all night and bark plus they won't be drawn away from those they protect.

We introduced them to the goats the other day and the boys kept between them and the fence and as usual when they layed down one was pointed one way and one was pointed the other way. I need to get updated pics of them. Both boys can get their mouths around my upper thigh

So is there a dog that is about shelty size that can be around chickens? am need something about that size maybe a little bigger that will keep an eye out without goin after the chickens

a toy chihuahua would probably be pretty safe

Other than that, I dont know of any smaller dog breed that as a BREED tend to be good with chickens...have heard that chows make good dogs around chickens as they have not had any prey drive bred into them....

One trick I did years ago was to fill the gas tank on the 1-ton with water. Some kids around here were stealing gas for their cars and four wheelers. I sure cost a lot of clean-ups with that trick.

About time to do it again as Teva found the gas cap off of the truck the other day.

Robin if you go too small you might as well name the dog Snack!!

With proper training most any dog can be taught to respect the birds.

I cant say I agree with that, I know professional trainers that will tell you you cant trust a dog completely if you arent there to assume the roll of packleader...I can teach any dog to leave chickens alone if I am there, and I have trained dogs for other people off and on for 10 years, but teaching a dog with high prey drive to respect and leave chickens alone when they are flying and squawking and actin up and your not there? Very few dogs could you trust in that situation....just my opinion...

that is the dilemma with the two dump dogs i have- if i let them run they will go after the neighbors cattle, and anything with feathers- so like carahs they are behind a fence and chained- the chihuaha mix is afraid of the chickens- go figure- wonder how something like a basset would do?

well, a bassett wont be very fast, lol....if a chicken couldnt get away from a bassett hound, well....there really isnt a good option for a small dog breed around chickens...you might keep your eyes open for a 'failed' stock dog, due to lack of drive, I see those now and then....an aussie, border collie or blue heeler that is lacking the working desire, they would be easier to keep away from chickens...
