morning folks! wow- looks like we may dry out a bit today- off to let the dogs run, i have found it is working for them, one at a time and then trying them near the run they are getting so they ignore the chickens- but that doesn't say the chickens ignore them- they will gather out of range and chatter about those weird critters

Sorry Six, the Ivermectin is what I've heard to use, too - like NanaKat said. I think there are some other drugs too - Wazine is one I've heard of but never used. The Ivomec gets rid of worms and mites/lice.

Sometimes it takes awhile to get answered, and like Okla Doodle said, it doesn't hurt to ask more than once on here. You are as much a part of this chicken family as anyone. I am certain it was no one's intention to slight you, and I'm sorry you were offended that no one answered you more quickly.

Just wanted to add a couple of things sixshooter that may help. If you get food grade DE - diatomatious earth (can get at many feed stores) and put that is where the chickens dust themselves or make a dust bath for them that helps, with mites and other external bugs. For worming if you would like to go a more natural but highly effective route, mix some DE and crushed red chili peppers (like the kind at pizza places) into the chicken feed. If you use Wazine you can not eat the eggs for a couple of weeks after and you can not give it to chicks. The DE and pepper have other excellent benefits. The DE is a natural source of highly digestable calcium (fossilized microscopic dieods) and the peppers help bring up the body temperature in the winter when they really need the extra warmth. In the summer I put more DE in the food and less red pepper, to help egg production and keep internal temps down and vice-versa in the winter when there is less egg laying but more warmth needed. I have also heard pumpkin seeds are an excellent wormer but have not grown pumpkins yet and can not afford to buy them to feed chickens.

I do use Ivermectin as well for feather mites but put a couple of drops under each wing at the shoulder joint. I have heard a mixture of windex and vinger is also effective but have only used this on the llamas to detract flys and mosquitos.

Hope this helps, I try to use more holistic products with a lower environmental impact on my birds. I will say I had not used chili peppers for a couple of months and some of the chickens were getting icky butts but just a week after adding just the chili peppers all the icky butts are cleared up. Yeah!

Oh I forgot, be careful with the DE, if you use to much, to often the egg shells can become very hard. If the shells seem abnormally hard to crack just cut back. Yes I made this mistake.

What ratio do you mix the chicken food, DE, and red chili peppers to worm them?

Good Morning fellow PEEPSTERS

Currently HIGH on Hair Colour.. its been several years since I coloured my hair and normally stick to something more closer to my colour.. but because I am tired of feeling older than I am.. I decided I needed a VAIN pick me up and went with a Auburn colour...lol

. I am very grateful for the rain we had this past weekend... it was an answer to many peoples prayers considering the fires that had been going on around this area.

Life here at the Welded Egg Farmstead on Four Little Acres has been QUITE BUSY... were blessed with the company of Peaches Kids this past weekend while she was out partying it up in EL PASO TX... (ha ha just kidding) that made it a full house and for a moment I felt like the Duggar Family(which I do enjoy watching on Itunes)... Been trying lately to keep my self sane with all the developing homes out here on my street... Jason and I are getting Claustrophobic living here where all these homes are getting built, and no offense to builders my family are either real estate or builders them selves.... for me I need my WIDE OPEN SPACES! Ya know you are too close to neighbors when boys start shooting their paint ball guns at your property and a blue paint ball whizzes by your head and you hear laughing... at that point I was very tempted to go get the pellet gun and see who would have the last laugh... but I was gently convicted on who is to be the bigger person... (ARGGG SOMETIMES I DONT WANNA)

EDIT TO SAY: In No Way Do I want to Promote Violence on another Human Bean, but sometimes I wanna take a belt to the parents of the kids that seem to just run amok and think they can do as they please... (I already see on my coop where they have been using it as target practice)

Our girls are laying and I have been selling the eggs which helps cover some of the feed costs... because we also get WIC for our placement kiddos I have store bought eggs up the wazzoo
ep.gif
and I feel like I am cheating on my girls with them..lol

Anyhoot thats been us in a nut shell....
