Yeah the cold wet weather can often throw them for a loop in the short term, they will be back in the swing of it in no time.

thats what I thought a couple weeks ago...wonderin if its the feed? Its 20% Big V layer pellet. Thinkin of switchin back to Nutrena layer pellets, they were 16% but were layin better when i was feedin that....its not only that one breeder pen, NONE of my hens are laying worth a crap, maybe 2 eggs a week per hen, MAYBE....

morning guys! dreary and cold out there- looks like our pekin drake is gone- no sign of him, dang!! so i think the girls freeranging is over- need to get a duck per put together, and not sure who it was that had muskovy's but i may be wanting a drake now- and a few girls- how big of a pen do they need?

need to get stuff done for poops today- will have notecard samples and prints, and a few originals, and donate some to the cause...

any breed requests, better pm me so i don't miss it- i will have games, guineas, cochins and anything i come up with by then- i may also be bringing a few laying hens, depends on how they look by then

morning...busy weekend!

Took some birds to a sale...mine were the only ones there and did fairly well. Bought a couple fish tanks and a bird carrier.

Moved birds around and picked some for sale at POOPS! Will have a guad of rose-combs...

no, I really dont. They are all worm free, mite free and on 20% layer pellets....and they are all first year hens, I was gettin a lot of eggs from them a month or so ago, almost an egg a day per hen then just BAM, stopped laying...

Here is a trick I found that works to kick start egg production that I believe someone on here on BYC recommended. First raise the protein level. You can do this by adding gamebird grower which is 28% or adding soy powder or sunflower oil. Do this about a week then cut them off of food for a day. I know this sounds mean but they put on mass really fast when the protein level is raised like this. The fasting usually kick starts egg production. Not exactly sure why but it works for me everytime. Since I free range my birds they get cut off every two weeks or so for a couple of days. First so they will eat the food that is kicked out and second the hens pop out eggs like gang busters for a week after the fasting. Of course they forage but I do not count that in their diet because they use a lot of energy foraging.

I hope this helps.

Borax mixed with apple jelly works great! I put it in a container with a small whole in it (so they can climb in and get it but my other pets can't) and set it up in a window so the kids can't get it either. They get some of it and take it to the ant hill and it kills them. You may see droves come in and get some but don't worry it does work!

Also for outside you can use a mixture of grits, water, and sugar:

Great idea! That sounds like something simple to mix up and use. I'll give it a try.

Nana Kat - Where do you get DE from? I wonder if garden centers have it. There's a TLC right down the road from me. I should stop in there and ask.

Good Morning Guys!

Good news last night guys, but it still isnt over. Please keep in mind that they still have lots of chickens that were working for this big dog rooster. It isnt over yet!

Robin, I may have an extra Muskovey Drake. I have had one chasing what I know is a hen and trying to pen her down. Hate to think something funny going on otherwise... LOL
I am really looking forward to POOPS! Looks like I will be spending alot of time in the next 2 weeks helping get the barn ready and all. I'm loving it!

We sure needed the extra rain and so glad to get it. I am not complaining at all.

I bought 3 piglets the other night and they have escaped from the cage. They ran around all day yesterday like ghost. I baited them with food yesterday but no takers. seen them last night.

Hope everyone has a blessed Monday!
