talk about pushin your luck lol...

She is a python, and very used to being handled, I was in no danger. And while I would never have a snake as a pet, they are spectacularly beautiful, and I encourage them in my yard b/c snakes only carry salmanila and you can only get that if you hold them and don't wash your hands, but rodentia on the other hand carry a host of diseases like the plague, and haunta.

Lol, no I was talkin about the dragon fly....

Humm.. you have given me something to think about... I'm just worried that they wont survive the an Oklahoma winter, the one Cochin and One bantam I have now refuse to use the ramp for their coop and every night I worry they are going to Freeze to death! I just could not bear to loose anymore chickens!

Do your baties do alright in the winter??
Thanks!

Welcome City Chick to the BYC Okies group.

I recently aquired two full size cochins who have enough feathers to see them thru the oklahoma winters. But what was interesting to me was that when I first put them in the coop with my other hens and roosters, they would not get up on the roosts or nesting boxes, they wanted to be on the floor. But after a couple of days, they followed the other hens and roosters and started going up to the roosts, which are quite high in my limited experience. They are atleast 4 1/2 feet off the floor. Now they do it no problem. I wonder if you had other styles of hens that could roost above if they would follow suit?

Im sure someone with more experience can probably answer or correct any errors I am making.

2.5 years straight thru without a break , fall , spring and summer classes , this summer is a well deserved vacation ...

Wow! You're doing great and I think you should be an Ag teacher, it would be a lot of fun for you.

Are you taking online classes? I'm taking some from UOP so that I can earn my teaching degree. Just completed my first teacher observation today.

I still have a ways to go too but each class is a step closer. And I definitely think you're due for a break after taking classes that many semesters in a row! I am impressed that you managed it for so long!

we used to have silkies (shhh, dont tell anyone) and they would not roost to save their lives. BUT, we bought a frizzled bantam cochin rooster, adn within a week they were all gettin up on the roost with him....I think they just follow 'monkey see, monkey do'...
