Olandsk Dwarf Chickens

We've found that they tend to have more sensitive stomachs, so we are liberal with probiotics, especially with chicks. They can also get overheated easily with brooder lights (go figure!), so watch for pasty butt. They're REALLY tiny as chicks, so if they're with older breeds, make sure they are either raised together (we can put the Eng Orps & Dwarfs together right after hatch with no problem, but if they're not in there together from the beginning, the Dwarfs can be roughed up a bit).

As far as hatching, ours can pip on Day 18 and hatch on Day 19, so be ready! Maybe lockdown a day early. But don't use too high a humidity, 50-55% in a thermal incubator or 60% in one with a fan.

Would 60% be good the entire incubation period?

Sounds a little high for the first 18 days.

So..... 50-55% days 1-18 then 60% till hatch??? So confused.

Also since it was said that they can hatch early should I set incubator for the 21 days? Or less???????

This breed is new to me and so is hatching. Any help on this breed is very much appreciated. I don't want to cause any harm to the chicks by not having expert input. Thanks so much!!!

Hi nipper75. Just follow the directions that come with the Brinsea. Worked perfectly for the 6 out of 7 Olandsk Dwarf eggs I hatched. Mine are coming up on 4 months old. I need to take updated pictures. They FINALLY started coming out into the run from the coop just this week. They were afraid of the outdoors and considered it big hen territory.

I did lose 1 rooster. I found him injured one evening with a hurt wing and holding up one foot. I isolated him for a while but he wasn't improving. I can only guess it was a spinal cord injury. We put him down humanely, never easy.

So out of the 6 eggs that hatched I think only 1 is a hen.

Thanks celticgarden. Did u lockdown early?

I have 9/9 of your little Olandsk babies developing! I managed to somehow crack one on the way home, but I taped it up and it is full of beautiful little growing veins!

I am running about 30-35 % humidity and will up it to around 60 for hatching. Can't wait for hatch day. I love, love, love these adorable munchkin birds.

... How did work out with the humidity??

Thank you to mothernaturesdaughter for the beautiful eggs she shipped to me and thank you for the extra. I hope they all hatch healthy.

On the other hand, the USPS really needs to take a look at how they run things.
