I have just picked up three silkies; two hens and one rooster. Their old coop did not have a roost, the new one does. The chickens are about 1 year old; can I teach them to use the roost? Is it a bad idea to just plop them on the roost? There are no other chickens to lead by example right now. Lastly, is there a typical adjustment period after which I can assume they are settled in, and what I am seeing is typical behaviour? Thank you!!

Chickens need a bit of prompting to use the roosts at first, you might have to physically put them up there every night for a few days. It took us a couple of weeks to get our chickens into the habit.
They can learn to use the roost though.
It's not necessary, but if you provide roosts at different heights, the birds will select which one they feel most comfortable on.
