In the Brooder
Oh ok then over winter I’ll definitely invest in a heat pad for them and how about egg production because I know there supposed to be horrid layers but a friend of mine has a Red Pyle hen who lays about 4 eggs a week which is amazing in my opinionIn the winter, when it gets cold in the garage, I have previously used heat lamps. (Attached picture). I also covered the top of the pen with a blanket. But as I have expanded, I have new pens that can’t harbor heAt lamps. I am thinking if it gets too cold, I’ll add heat pads (or whatever they’re called)to the new pens, and still use heat lamps in te old ones, or put a space heater in the garage. Covering the entire pen with a blanket (minus a few inches for air movement) really helps keep most of the cold out!
BUT I have found the heat lamps can ruin their feathers! No matter here I put the perch, or positioned the lamp, they wanted nothing more than to stand under it. The heat completey fried/dried out their back feathers, and I still have a couple that haven’t regrow them all yet. Just a heads up if you do decided to use lamps! It may just be easier to use a heat pad and blanket!
