Old English Game as flock guardian?

Well our old rooster sacrificed himself when a neighbor's dog went after the hens a few weeks ago. The chickens were outside of our goat pasture temporarily so didn't have our dogs for company. I want to pick a breed to replace him likely to keep an eye on the sky for hawks and to herd the hens around and alert them. In the past this has been kind of luck of the draw for me... Do you guys think an old english game too flighty or since the hens will be local he should stick around and be fine?

I don't think any rooster if they're the only rooster would walk away from a flock of females.
