Old English Rooster Life Span

my rooster King Pedro has been through alot. this July 11th he will be 4. i got him in August 4 years ago. by reading some of my posts you can probably tell i don't like to interfere very often and he he has survived alot of attacks. he has won every one until this may 9 2015 a Saturday, by 3 dogs. i took him to the vet. it cost me 90$. i wouldn't do that for any other animal. i would kill it throw it in the trash and get another one. its cheaper. Pedro i will bury. when i lived in San Bernardino i was concerned i might not be be able to bring my chickens up here to Yuciapa. so i gave away all his sons, daughters and grand children.

i want him to have an heir.
this is very very important to me.

he really helped me come out of a depression from the war.

so i want to know how long he is likely to live.
and how long he is likely to stay fertile.

10 plus years lifespan if properly cared for and fertile until near very end. Look into how the gamechicken guys use restricted rations. Train the bird if it means that much to you and invest in predator protection.

In San Bernardino i kept them in a coop. I brought two with me up here. and I let them free on half an acre of land. and I have slowly been building my flock back on that half an acre of land. it is fenced in.

but as far as training them I have no idea what you're talking about. but I will begin looking it up right now.


ok i just read several threads on training chickens. training them to be inside. clicker training them. potty training them. and a few other thing. Pedro wouldn't like that. he likes being free and outside. i definitely appreciate the advice. but Pedro wont be be losing his freedom.

but a big thank for his likely years though. more than appreciated.

A few of mine centered on house are free-ranged year round and have several acres of quality ground to forage and two dogs to protect them. Those same birds are trained mainly so I can take them of property to educate public. The training also enables getting birds in when I expect trouble such as when dogs not able to get out.

The trained birds will come running / flying when called and perch on us when we sit on the porch. Hens will brood chicks on my lap. Same hens not so trained would flog me in the face for getting so close.
