Old Enough to Show

I kind of resent that "if you are a judge", my name is William Post. Ypou can look it up since you apparently think I'm lying. As to Jamie Carson telling you he thinks you should show them that's his opinion & you have mine as well. I judged a 900 bird fair show today & disqualified probably 30 birds because they were too young & therefore too small-lacking in breed characteristics. I don't see what the owners of those birds learned from the experience except that their birds were too young & small to show. Your birds, your choice but ti's a bit cheeky to ask for advice then argue with it. Acept it or reject it but since you've never shown I don't think you're in a position to argue with someone whohas, extensively.
Also, "show quality French Marans chicks" is kind of a meaningless phrase. No one can look at a chick & determine it's show potential. BTW the breed is Marans not Maran.

Sorry, i was told by a breeder that the parents were from us show lines and that the birds themselves were show quality... Thanks for the Marans thing i thought that it meant plural birds, now i wont look stupid in front of other chicken people :D also sorry for arguing i didn't realize i was...

This is true is so many ways, it is much like so called "breeders" selling show quality hatching eggs.
There is no way to tell if any of the chicks from the egg will be show quality..

You weren't arguing...I think the person speaking was directing his comments to another post and got confused.

I did not say anything about marans, so why are you yelling at me? By the way, my birds did well, and I learned a lot. My barred rock pullet (16 weeks) took best in breed.

And Jamie Carson is judging the US National in January, so I'm sure he knows what he is talking about.

The 13 week old silkie I took got BV, and I do know she was young, but I had a lot of enjoyment out of showing her. The kids loved her. So I don't regret my decision one bit.

I do not know Bill, but he is right. I love it when people ask for advice and  then argue with the answer. Jamie Carson is also very well respected. There are several reasons for entering a show. Most fair shows don't really matter as far as being considered to have a true representative selection of correct exhibition style poultry. The judging is often suspect as well, if not done by APA/ABA licensed judges. Fair shows are basically collections of birds for the public to see. They and many of the exhibitors don't know the difference. Jamie may have been encouraging you to enter simply to get the numbers up and/or for variety, which in itself at least holds people's interest a little better, and benefits the fancy if in no other way than as exposure to the public that these birds exist.
Merle Watson of NS was the judge at the Fair. Danny Padgett of FL is judging the Fall Show. Both are very good APA Judges.

I well hold back my Opion of Jamie..... Mearl is a great guy.

How ever i feel like 4 months old is to young to enter into a show.... I know with my sussex, they would still be small and IMO not fit to show. Bantams would be a bit better because they would be closer to the size.

I much prefer Mearl, or Trevor MacDonald of PEI to judge at shows...

Any specific reason?

I am very new to showing, and he has been nothing but kind and encouraging. He will tell me what is wrong with my birds, and how to improve it, or if it is just not worth improving. He is honest, and doesn't sugar coat. He's been judging/exhibiting for over 25 years.

One reason i am welling to post. Is he has murdered the pronucation of a breed names... I mean not even close to what they should be pronuced. Also comes off as a know it all.... I don't like that lol. I well leave it at that.

What breed was that?

He has a degree in animal science and won animal handler of the year, so he kind of does know more than you might think.

Jaime is a good judge. Judges don't always agree even tho there is only one APA SOP. This is part of human nature. Not all doctors are top of the class and neither are all judges. (Most beginners. 15 years or less) Think they know better than the judges.......happens all the time. I don't always agree with judges decisions just within my own birds, but I know that I have weeks to look at them and they have a minute to look at them. Bad judges don't get the judging jobs Jaime gets. I don't always agree with him either, but I think he is a good judge. I'm on the ABA judges licensing committee and have been on the same APA committee, so it's not like I can't tell who a good judge is.

Mostly judges get run down by newbies that don't win.
