Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Judging by the fact that he was away from her and everyone else and basically dead, I'd say the message is that she doesn't want anything to do with him. He's definitely runty, but he's trying! He fought hard to come back from near death, and I'm not letting her ruin that will to survive.

I'll give her 48 hours of hourly checks to see if her attitude towards the chick improves, and if it doesn't I'm gonna just pull all of the babies. It would be a shame though, because she'll be in there all by herself until they're old enough to join her now that the rooster is gone.

*sigh*
Why dont you take the one polish chick and a few others but leave her with a few. She wont be happy but at least she can raise them.

just went out to feed and water, and darned if the broody i have been arguing with didn't leave her remaining egg on the nest and snuggle with her sister- so the egg is in the bator, it was cold, any chances for it- it is due to hatch.......

My broody got confused and switched nests on day 18.... I had to work late so didn't check on chickens when I got home.... Needless to say the next morning I found ice old eggs 4 of them. I thought for sure they were dead.... Well 2 of the 4 hatched!! And maybe even 3 ... I can't remember where in the bator I put the silkie egg .... So yes abandoned eggs can hatch! Good luck.

Heres Henrietta and her 3 day old babies!

Btw I have 10 chicks in the brooder from the bator one just hatched out in the bator one pipped! Its day 23 late little buggers!

Because I don't want to have to go through the introduction process between two different sets of chicks. We'll see how she does. I already have the two that rejected her in a brooder, and if I decide to keep them then I might just do that. I tried putting the polish in there and he was NOT happy. Screamed the whole time. I'm hoping she just gets over it. I'll let her sleep on it and see what happens.

Maybe, sounds like you have a professional broody there! Lol

I think Popcorn may not be able yet to regard eggs normally. I caught my broody starring at an egg a couple of days after I had given her the chicks, those hormones may just be so strong they kind of get fixated. There is no science here, just my primitive attempt to explain a behavior.

Good explanation My hen who had just hatched found a duck egg that had been laid one morning I heard her clucking and low and behold there she sat on top of the duck egg with her 2 chicks on either side. It was so funny shes a bantam also.
