Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Good explanation My hen who had just hatched found a duck egg that had been laid one morning I heard her clucking and low and behold there she sat on top of the duck egg with her 2 chicks on either side. It was so funny shes a bantam also.
Aren't our critters amazing? We learn so much from them, they calm our nerves and entertain us all at the same time.

Adorable! So many cute chicks! And proud Henrietta!

Smokey is showing her 4 new chicks where the food and waterer are located. But she's still tucking that last egg under herself - so maybe she thinks its still good. I'll give it a few more days.

Topsy is still very much smooshed down on her 3 remaining eggs (2 marans and 1 silkie) - but she too is showing how to get food - and I noticed the chick found the waterer herself. So still hopeful the Maran eggs may hatch. They arrived 2 days later then the silkies and were put in the bator later -so very possible they are still developing.

It's funny to watch my teenagers - Smokey's last brood that are 12 weeks old this coming Saturday - hang out on the roost overhead and listen intently to the mommas and chicks below. I wonder if they miss Smokey.

Just checked on Violet and all of her babies are warm and accounted for! It's pretty chilly here so every time I go down there they're under her, but everyone is alive and well!

Luckily I have the day off so I'll be checking her intermittently throughout the day to make sure it stays that way :)

Sounds so sweet, don't you enjoy chicken life and all it means. Congrats !!

I'm not sure if it's wishful thinking on my part, but I think my broody's comb has pinked up just the tiniest bit. She wouldn't eat the tuna, so I'll make her more eggs today. I wish I could move her but I'm afraid she won't stay put ~she never has before.

I feel so bad. One of my nearly two year old hens has been broody 4 or 5 times and always with bad timing. Last year her and my BO went broody at the same time and I let the BO hatch and broke the GLW. Now the GLW is broody AGAIN...but we're in the middle of run maintenance and I don't want any babies getting hurt. One of the newer hens in there is pretty dominant and will flog your shoe if you put it up to her and I'm afraid she'd hurt the chicks.

Poor girl just wants to be a mama SOOO bad but I don't think I can do it this round with Violet already having chicks (in another coop). Every time she goes broody her growls get more and more shrieky because she doesn't want me to take her off the nest. :(
