Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Ok guys! I need help!

I just sold Henriettas chicks, the lady is picking them up tomorrow! I dont think I can do it! She loves those chicks! I am letting her keep one hen but is that enough? Will she still freak out?

I feel terrible! But I cannot keep them until their 5 weeks old then no one will want them because they will know their gender.... Ugh its so hard....
I wouldn't be able to do it. Incubated chicks I sell all of the time. I've never sold a broody's chicks. Maybe someone who has will chime in.

GREAT news! I just told the lady about the chicks and the mom and she said "Oh we have a hen that we can put them with if she accepts them" Lets pray she accepts them! Oh I hope they will

Do you think I should take the chicks tonight so she cant see or tomorrow when she can see?

If they are under the broody I would wait until tomorrow so you don't have to put them in a brooder overnight to stay warm. She will be upset for a little while but it will pass.

many 1st time broody's act as you describe. I have 1 doing that now and have had many over the last few years do the same. others just make up their mind and sit.

I'm not sure how large guinnea eggs are. My Sumatra's can comfortably sit on 12 of their medium sized eggs. And they weigh 3 to 4 lbs if that helps.

The guinea eggs are the same size as the Cornish's eggs -- small like a pullet. That would be wonderful if she could handle 10 eggs. Hopefully the guineas will continue to lay eggs where I can find them -- I found another nesting place inside the run last night! :) Thanks for your help!

Well my Scarlett that was the first broody of this year has done it again, one chick hatched another peeping up a storm. Just wish she had a spare for Ebbie, she is still missing her chick.

Macey is still sitting tight no sounds heard from her eggs yet.

. Even though I have a hen named "mama", I call every broody mama. Except for Miss Penelope our runner duck. She is simply Miss Penelope or Miss P.........
I do the same thing! I have two mamas right now... I hope they arent confused :)

Well today is the day. Im not to worried about it though. Its been 3 weeks and she isnt paying them much attention. I have a feeling it wont be long anyways until she lets them go. She still clucks for them but she cares about other things now and just leaves them outside.
