Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

At long last... my Broody with her babies! She has been brooding since mid April, possibly a little longer, I have been VERY worried about her. I was not successful at moving her before hatch, but have her safe and secure away from the other hens and roos, she's eating and her comb has even pinked up a little. A VERY little. The yellow chick all the way to the right, was near death in the incubator at my son's school. It was dried to the bottom and bleeding, being pecked and stepped on by the other chicks. I nursed him for a few days in our incubator with antibiotic ointment and infant vitamins and then stuck him under her. He is doing MARVELOUSLY now! My son says she caters to that little guy.

Beautiful job you did for that lil one, and congrats on the hatch, precious.

Hey where did the blonde come from?

Congrats!!!

What is so funny is that the roo was a RIR and of course my mamma is a BR. I am really curious about that black chick with the white dot. It looks just like our BR's, but I've been told I won't get a BR from this breeding! The only other hens we have are RIR's and BSL.
You wont get a barred with the mom being barred and the Dad being solid. If the dad was barred it would be barred.

But your little one will be a BSL.

As far as the BR gene, I just think it's so funny she ended up looking exactly like what she's not supposed to be!! :)

Well today is the day. Im not to worried about it though. Its been 3 weeks and she isnt paying them much attention. I have a feeling it wont be long anyways until she lets them go. She still clucks for them but she cares about other things now and just leaves them outside. :idunno

Oh well, easier for me to seperate them....

Oh sorry Tripp, if it helps Smokey started laying and ignoring her last brood at four weeks old.
