Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Thanks for the advice.  I went out to check on her and one of the chicks fell while I was standing there.  I caught it.  I didn't know I had reflexes like that!  I put her in a box in the spare coop.  I fed and watered her.  She drank for about 10 minutes straight.  Later I checked on her and one of the remaining eggs was cracked into three places.  The chick was out, the membrane is bloody, and the umbilicus? of the chick is open.  I think she must have crushed it after I moved her :(  I left the chick in the box with her, it was peeping, but I doubt it will make it.

Chicks are pretty resilient. Hope it works out!

Here is my little broody Princess.. She went broody in a 'temporary' nest box I had set up on the floor when one pullet was laying eggs there instead of the fancy one I bought them. :) The RIR on the left is the same age but she's not broody yet. :p

I'm sorry about the little one that got crushed, i hope it makes it. You did save the life of the one that fell.

you did the right thing by moving her.

Odd possible problem:

I have two broodies. One is sitting on one egg next to the nest box (she hatched out two, two months ago so I gave her one to sit on), and the other is sitting on 3 in the nest box. 2 of the 3 in the nest box are pipping (YAY!) the other one I am not sure if it will hatch. The one under the girl sitting next to the box hasnt pipped yet either. If hers doesnt hatch will they just raise the chicks together? If not what should I do??

i need some good ideas to put into my coop to maybe make my coop look better and make my chickens happier and make my hen very safe and at home any good ideas anyone has in there coop that there hens and roosters like.

Wait and see what happens. I didn't think Topsy would hatch anything because Smokey had already hatched two from the same batch of shipped eggs and nothing seemed to be happening with Topsy. However she did hatch the next day, so just hang in there. If they've both sat on the eggs and they get along then they may cobrood them.

How about DirectTV then you could enjoy some quality tv shows together? JK

I don't know if they love it or not, but I like having my roost bars horizontal over a manure box. There is less squabbling over seating and the chickens enjoy dusting in the manure box after I've cleaned it out and put in fresh Sweet PDZ.

I think they also like the screened windows at roost level so they can check the outside weather.

That would be flippin adorable.
