Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Oh why I was concerned is because the egg under the silkie is a banty and I guess I was just expecting it to hatch sooner than the others, but like I said earlier I am unsure of how long these were sat on before I got them from our farmer friend.

My one from this morning is starting to zipper! I have another one pipping and the other 2 are still just hanging out. I feel bad at the moment because our rooster was hanging out with the broodies and I apparently scared him away when I opened the door to check on them. I hope I have a little chick in the morning! I will probably go check 4 more times tonight, I am just so darn excited. You never get tired of seeing a little chick pop out from under its mama for the first time :)

I'm sorry about the little one that got crushed, i hope it makes it. You did save the life of the one that fell.

you did the right thing by moving her.

It is still alive, but weak. I just went out to check on it and rolled it under the momma hen because it was out part of the way. It will get down into the 70's tonight so I really don't want it to be chilled. I considered setting up a brooder in the laundry room and moving it there, but there is nothing I can do to save it. It has dried off, but the feathers haven't fluffed. The "umbilicus" has closed and the rest of the yolk has absorbed. Its eyes are closed, but it cheeped when I picked it up. It seems very week. One more egg has a crack and I hope it is a true crack! We will see in the morning.

I couldn't believe I was there at the right moment to catch the chick. I really can't believe I caught it. I don't have reflexes like that!! I can't remember what made me want to go out in the 100 degree heat this morning and go into the shed. Good thing I did.

Divine intervention. Hoping the little one gains its strength. Yeah! Another chick soon. :)
