Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Woohoo! Just got 10 fertile eggs (SURPRISE EGGS!) from a person off of craigslist. 1 blue egg, 3 banties, 1 white egg, 4 light brown eggs, and 1 brown egg. *PLEASE HATCH*
Gonna get some pics. They should hatch July 22nd.

How mesmerizing is it to sit and watch the broody wth chicks...it's where I have my coffee. I do feel lucky to have a good broody hen, it looks like one of the chicks will look like her. Today they are doing alot better at hopping through the weeds and diving to get the good treats mama digs up....she likes them to be very competetive I think. I never thought I'd get such chick raising gals...every time I contemplate getting an incubator, I just stop and think, I could never do such a good job,...no need to mess with it now. :)
well put and very true. I know my hens know how to be chickens better than I do. I'm not sure I'll ever use either of my incubators again other than to hatch eggs the mama's leave in the nest when they need to raise their lil ones. Then of course slip them any chicks that may hatch at night.
I'm doing lots of furniture repairs today which means 5 minutes here and there waiting for something to dry. With 3 broody's in the yard with young chicks there is plenty for me to watch! 19 chicks between the 3 of them.

. If they do i was thinking about giving one chick to melow (well the egg when its hatching), but i don't know if i trust her or not, its such a hard choice to make! do i give her a chance? or do i not take the risk?

I know but if she has been a faithful broody maybe you should give her a chance. It's gotta be hard on them to sit and nothing hatch. good idea about giving her an egg while it's hatching. is she still sitting on her eggs?
