Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Bg, good luck with your girl.

I waited until they sat a couple of days before reporting. I have 2 more broody's. A black Sumatra and a dark blue Sumatra.

I'm obviously working with the wrong breeds!!!

My Henny Penny hatched her very own egg today this morning. yesterday night I candled the two eggs she was sitting on (she started with 7) And that one was viable to me. so this morning I saw this tiny chick and decided with my husband to pull the 3 that I bought so that they don't kill this one as they are double or triple it's size. The hen is still sitting on the egg and I often go to take a pick to this chick as the heat is making him go often lay out. Should I wait at least a week to put others back?
You might not be able to put the others back, she may not take them so if you try stay close by so you can get them out quick. Congrats on the new chick.

Happy 4th to everyone!

I continue to feel sorry for myself here - had to carve into the top of my favourite Splash Ameraucana's feet yet again, attempting to get rid of this bumblefoot. VERY discouraging. I've had her on oral antibiotics for more than 2 weeks now and don't appear to be getting anywhere with this hen. I think I pulled more 'gunk' out today than I did the first couple of surgeries - although maybe that's a sign that I AM getting to the root of this finally. My large animal vet has graciously offered to help me with further surgeries which I will take him up on if this doesn't turn things around but you can be sure - she will become worth her weight in gold when that surgery is paid for. <sigh>

Anyway, Broody Naima and the kids are doing fabulously. She's been trying to get them out of the box but they aren't budging so far. So she does her big poop and flap and squawk and returns to them - just to spend most of her time trying to keep them cool! I'm still adding ice cubes to their water several times a day. I'm thinking tomorrow she'll likely get them out. She almost had them convinced today.

Miss Lydia, I've been thinking about you and your broody mama. I hope she's recovering without incident and that she and her brood are thriving.

Oh my gosh BG I am so sorry your having to go through this with your girl, I hope you got it all this time.

I am not seeing alot of improvement in Lydia, but she has eaten good today and I have soaked her leg in epsom salt water. I am still hoping for full recovery.

I hope every one has had a great 4th. we ate barbecue deer, coleslaw, baked beans and homemade brownies with vanilla icecream, now i feel like a stuffed bear.

Isn't it about time the site managers created a whole separate section for this subject?

With all the interest in this, incubator hatching and broody hatching should really have their own categories, I think--totally different subjects...

Where or to whom should this be suggested?

have you tried vetrycin- i did this last time, it is used on staph infections- so i spray the bumble with it - after loosening the edge of the scab- then vet wrap it, do this daily, and in many cases it clears up- here is another option- it was in the quail thread,

So Wilma finally decided to go broody again. It has been above 90 for 7 days straight. Anyway so I tracked down some great quality eggs and slipped them in place of her own since she is just pq. She took them immediately and even seemed happy to gain an extra. Lol. Day 0.

these girls know how it goes! The dark blue is a 1st time broody. As I didn't have any dark blues until they were born last summer. The Black is on her 2nd broody endevor of the year. She hatched 2 lil ones in March. She is back in basically the same spot this time.
