Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Can I add my two cents? I'd put her in the box right where she is, leave the front open, get her back on the nest. Tonight move the whole thing to her confined area and keep her there for three days....if she stays on the nest after the move you can feel like she'll continue. I'd wait a day or two after the move before swapping eggs, and definetly three days before letting her out at will.?

You should be able to see veins in the entire egg with a little spot of dark in the center starting about day 3 of incubating, either in a bator or under the broody.
There are lots of threads with good pics on BYC. Do a search for it and you'll find them. They should help better then just words from us. I'm sorry I can't link you up, I'm on my iPad tonight.
Okay, thanks!

Isn't it about time the site managers created a whole separate section for this subject?

With all the interest in this, incubator hatching and broody hatching should really have their own categories, I think--totally different subjects...

Where or to whom should this be suggested?
That's what this thread is - it's only for broody hatching.

Miss Lydia....how is Miss Lydia? I hope she's better. Did you check for swelling in her hocks, and heat? I'm wondering if it's more of a problem higher up, that is possibly making her drag her feet more or something?

Well, either my broody Giant hen was holding 2 eggs in her wings when I lifted her up the other day, or she has laid 2 since going broody, which I highly HIGHLY doubt. She has 6 eggs now (out of 10 that she started with), I thought she had only 4. I haven't candled yet, but she seems to be sticking to her nest now. Today is day 12. I did find 3 eggs all in a cluster about a foot from her nest last night....

They felt not cold, but definitely not as warm as they usually are, but I tucked them back under her. If these eggs weren't so doggone valuable to me, I'd just leave them to watch & see what she does with them.

Today is supposed to be 98. I've had a fan on her for over a week now, which I leave on 24/7, putting it on low at night and high during the day. And, she hasn't been eating much, so I've been cooking her one egg yolk a day...she readily gobbles it up, but won't eat any feed. I'm going to give her 2 yolks today. Oh, I should say that I've put in a bit of chick starter and she does seem to pick at that. But she hasn't pooped in 3 days now

so I know she's not eating enough!

Ok, that was an effort. The cat crate barely fit in the coop door; it's 28"x14"-ish.. But it is set up. I pushed Summer to the run door and made sure she started a morning walk before I started. Her dud eggs are now in that crate in her corner waiting for her. And she has ten eggs now. Her sister has been very giving.

I am going to go check in ten to make sure she has accepted the new arrangement. :)

Hmm wonder were she was hiding those eggs? !0 more days to go Wy, yippie. I went out first thing this morning and switched Miss Lydia and her babies to the other side of the brood coop so i could clean out their side, She was up and kinda standing on her leg but I haven't actually had her out to look at it this morning. I have checked her leg over though and saw a small bluish bruise on her upper leg a couple days ago and no heat but a little swelling so i will continue soaking in Epsom salt water and hope for the best. [she likes this side of the coop better because they have a window they can see all action instead of just looking out the front. ]Congrats on the new kitty Indy cute.

I've been giving my broody girl feeder insects (dubia's) about 5 every day. I know she gets off the nest at least once every day, I can't tell if she is pooping or not or eating other then the dubia's I bring her, but she doesn't appear to be loosing weight, not that it is very easy to tell w/ all the fluffing up she does. It's her and my first time "broody" so just hoping nature knows what it's doing. My girl is in an open nesting tray, anything I have that would give her more privacy would also block airflow and w/ temps over 100 for the past week or two that is just not an option.

That may make it even easier! I think the hardest part is moving the broody location, the GPS in their brains sends them back to that location! Now wish me luck, I have to move my poarch broody to the new broody pen in the coop very soon, and another broody has nested in the same flat I had planned for her...should I just lock them both in there together? I'd make a partion but i am out of power cords, and construction is not really my thing...may be I just prop a piece of plywood between them...if I can find a piece already the right size!, geez! :)
