Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Oh my gosh Bobbies thats alot of strange weather happening up your way. My dad is heading out to Charlottesville on Tues to visit my brother. Better tell him what he's in store for.

Hahaha, if he makes it out of the 400F weather he will have a nice weekend coming up. I wish the second part of that fake weather forecast were true. I'd love some 80F weather!

bobbieschicks - any idea how that volcano is going to affect me in WV?? What's this about using a yogurt maker for incubator? Will you tell me how that works? Just in case of emergency...?

Haha, no idea. But I'm sure the 400F temps will cause some issues ;)
Don't you wish we were about to get some 80F weather! It would almost be worth the 102F with 3' of tidal surge and Godzilla trampling everything.

Yes I read that someone was successful doing that. I bet if you search for yogurt makers as incubator you would find something useful. Apparently they have the right temp and humidity to work. I've never tried it. Then again my yogurt maker would barely hold one egg.

This is my first time trying things "the natural way". Three of My Salmon Favorelles all went broody at once. My first time with broody hens too! haha
I picked up some eggs and all three are happily sitting on them now. The wait may KILL me, however! :) Glad to have some partners in crime.

That refrigerated one mey be viable Trader Joes Eggs are kept at about 45 degrees for several days and there are people who are hatching them.

I'm not even joking... my broody's sat for 2 months before I put the eggs in. But... they were sitting on golf balls.
Your avatar is adorable, yes them girls can be persistant, My Cochin Bantam frizzle who lost her only chick about a month ago, was inside the coop in a corner all day yesterday she is 4 yrs old so was really worried she was sick, or hiding out from one of our roos that has come of age in the last month, I went in and brought her out once just to make sure she was ok but she just went right back in, well this morning she has laid an egg, took her that long but now she doesn't want to give it up, I hate to take it from her but the last couple eggs I gave to other hens to sit weren't fertile [I'm thinking she is maybe passed her prime] anyway I felt so awful when she lost her chick she called for it for at least a week, and other hens had their chicks so it made it 2X hard on Ebbie, so now what to do, leave her alone and candle in about 5 days? and hope it's fertile or go ahead and take it now. I'm just thinking out loud ya'll, but go ahead and give advise if ya want too, I really was hoping to be through with broodies for the year, Matter of fact I am selling some of my bantams and their chicks if anyone is in Western NC.
