Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

My silkies when brooding get off the nest every 2-3 days to eat and poop and dust bathe....some are off the nest for 10-15 mins and others have been off for 30 mins or so....but they always go back to sitting on the eggs on their own :)

*hugs* Heather x
yes thats what she was doing at the start then a few days ago started coming out for longer in the morning the longest iv left her to go back in on her own was 45 mins then i placed her back in so i will try and be brave and leave her to go in on her own tomorrow morning lol if she hasnt gone back in after a hour il pop her back in as its raining and abit cold out dont want the eggs to chill right out . she has lost some weight so im quessing that is why she is staying out longer plus i did try and get her to stop brooding for a week befor i gave in and got her some eggs will not be trying that again as it felt mean keep kicking her out the nest and removing all eggs from her lol

Well I have a broody due to hatch first of next week, went in to clean coop and felt something crawling on me, looked down on my arms and their were 1000's of tiny mites crawling,

I clean out my coops everyday and spray them with poultry protector but still have mites, so went ahead and treated Betty White with Epernix pour on and I had just gotten an order from Vita cost and saw they had Orange Guard so i ordered 2 bottles good thing cause I just about used the whole 32 oz in my one coop, I even took broody out and her eggs and sprayed down her nest and shaving, I was so grossed out and mad too since I trusted this PP to keep them out. So watch out with all this hot weather mites are going to be a problem I have a feeling. Now to see if I can buy Orange guard in gallon jugs.

Now have 4 chicks and 2 more pipping...

On a bad note..... It is 100F and I just watched my neighbor pull 2 dead barred rocks out of his coop!

I filled my waterers with ice and added an extra water bowl in my bigger coop/run

We have 2 broodies!! I THINK! One hasnt left the nest since like 9am, and the other one has left but came back and is now guarding the egg I gave her. Both of them shoved it under them and one kept tapping like "You will stay with me forever......." But then left it aloe

One prob- we have NO fresh eggs, and the eggs i gave them have been in the fridge for anywhere from 1-4 days. :/ Ill candle in a couple days but Ill keep saving ones we get, we're down to like 5 layers who dont always lay (the GOOD layers when broody!! LOL)

ONLY ONE GOING BROODY HERE IS ME!!!

Im buying an incubator im buying an incubator im BUYING AN INCUBATOR!!!!!!!!!!!

Has anyone ever had a broody chicken hatch duck eggs?

We've hatched our own fertile eggs three times now, but DD has a drake now, and she'd really like some ducklings. Our hens tend to be very patient and will sit for more than 3 weeks. The one time a hen gave up on her nest (she had been broody for 3 weeks, but only had the eggs for one week) another hen took over and hatched them!

Raccoon was back. Couldn't find what he wanted in my free-rangers' coop so he headed for my breeder pens. Bad idea. THIS one won't be a problem anymore, at any rate.

glad you got it BG.

I wasn't so lucky this morning. A Red Fox got my RIR broody and one of her chicks. The remaining 3 are around 3.5 weeks old and acting like chickens. As long as they go to bed in the coop tonight they will be ok.

So I have another Fox to shoot.

Something BAD happened and half of my chicken population is GONE!!

I need more lol I have kind of a problem I had 2 chickens in one nesting box and I lost that chicken :( I have another nest i found that isnt pictured and ANOTHER nest under the other steps also not pictured. I think this hot weather cooked my eggs its been almost 2 months and still no babies :( so I'm removing the eggs that have been neglected and just going to pick them up daily now :(
