Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Update on Snowi, apparently she is going broody. I put two more eggs in the new 'clutch' and she keeps going back to it now. She sat on them all night and looked broody as heck. She jumped out for about 20 minutes this morning and then clambered back into the coop. I need to check again, but I am willing to bet she is sitting on her eggs. :D

I snuck two chick filled eggs (day 18) under my broody last night and removed the fake eggs. So we'll see on Saturday-ish if they hatch and if she'll take them! :) I have another chicken that's broody now, but she's been broody once already this year and I know she'll probably take whatever I give her. I'll just give her chicks when they hatch. :p

Wynette- smart thinking to split the hatch! Wish I could but DH would probably send ME to the couch for buying a bator!

If I didn't REALLY need these chicks, I'd just have given them all to the broody, but this may be my last opportunity to hatch off these chickens, so it's super important that I get as many chicks as possible. And, with my broodies thus far this year being less than stellar models of broody mommas, this will at least tell me if we've still got decent fertility in that pen!

Best of luck with Snowi - sound like she'll be a good one!

featherz - best of luck with your broody!

My broodies are doing pretty good this year, with the exception of the little D'Uccle that doesn't like Ms. Cruella's chicks and tries to thump them when the get to close to her. They all get away. Ms Cruella is afraid of her too. The other Spitzenhauben is down to 9 eggs and one week left. I have way too many chicks. Have over 24 Olive Egg babies, and 18 baby D'Uccles. My Marans I got from Nancy are starting to lay, still waiting on the Lavender Ameraucana to lay.

FINALLY!! My turkeys are hatching right on time as if they've been tic-marking the inside of their eggs.

Now let's see if the little bantam chickens don't get weirded out by hatching turkeys. "Man, that's an ugly chick. I blame the father."

I've always loved that picture! Very fitting, and okay - LOL on the "father" comment! Congrats!

^_^ Thanks! I'm very excited. I failed multiple times to artificially hatch turkeys (I have no idea why. I have no problem with chickens), so I asked my friend who eternally is cursed with broody bantams if I could borrow her broodies' butts.

Woooo I'm not the Turkey Reaper anymore!!!

Topsy hasn't stopped her plea to be broody a second time so I'm hoping to indulge her with some splash maran eggs.
That is if I win the auction.

Took out the infertile eggs and gave her back the ping pong balls.

I thought Sunny and Smokey were trying to go broody, but they are spending large amounts of time off the nest and still laying.
So no go on those two for now.
