Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

hatched out some california white chicks yesterday - these were miracle chicks as most of the eggs were cracked due to shipping.. So they didn't go under the broodies until after hatch. Put most under my gigantic langshan and the rest under my EE mutt - and so far so good! One sacrificial chick was put out there last night under each hen and when both were alive this morning slipped the rest under.

They are clucking and acting motherly - hope nothing bad happens when they realize their chicks all look alike. :p

Congrats on the new fuzzy butts - can't wait to see some pics!

Yeah! Smokey hatched a chick. I haven't a clue which one I just heard a cheep sound and saw Smokey's feathers move a bit to flash a leg. So hoping its a Maran and a pullet. If its the blue egg that hatched I'm hoping at least one Maran hatches too.
Tomorrow is day 21. Topsy is still sitting tight and so far I have resisted the urge to lift their feathers to peek. But it's so hard!
Congrats!!!

Congrats I hope all goes well!!
Miss Lydia, Macy has gone broody again and I can't find her nest. She is outside somewhere, but only comes out in the mornings before I get up - I see all is well and that she is alive, but she doesn't try to go back until AFTER I leave for work. Sneaky little bugger!

Any tips? She doesn't have fertile eggs, so I would like to find the nest and replace them with something fertile. She is determined.. I'll give her that!

Yeah! Smokey's other dark maran egg has a pip. I saw it when she rolled it under her. Hoping it hatches okay.

I caught a glimpse of the first maran chick. It is gorgeous. Silver white down and so pretty. Of course that means roo.

Congrats!!, i hope Topsy gets a chick...

Grabbed a pic of Smokey feeding her baby that hatched yesterday - no clue about the other one as she's not moving much right now. That's good news of course as she has 3 more eggs under her and one Maran egg definitely had a pip on it.

Last time they both hatched chicks at the same time I worried because Smokey had started hatching her silky babies, but Topsy didn't have any. Then the next morning Topsy had her two and Smokey had her four.
So I won't worry about Topsy just yet. Oh who am I kidding! I'm worried about Topsy - I do so pray she gets at least one chick or she'll get some nearby farm mix day old chicks I saw on Craigslist ;)
