Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

BO's are great moms. Wish they weren't so low in the pecking order though. I don't have my girl any more. She had an awful time kick starting her laying after her broody period, and laid weird uneven eggs and then a triple yolker broke inside of her, causing infection. Poor thing.. I tried everything to help her. She was a broody I wanted to have around forever.

After my orp was broody she got higher in the pecking order, she dosent give them a peck she gives them a beating!

My roosters so horrible, he gets pecks the hens when feeding because he likes a feeder to him self. Today the orp and the chicks were having a bowl of food and rocky went up behinf them and pecked the orp and then the chicks and the two chicks let out such a peep, poor things..

yes I remember that. I'm sure breed matters. White Leghorns are naturally freaky skiddish creatures.
:thumbsup My boys are sooo sweet.

None of my non-broody hens would ever consider doing such a thing :) My boys do it on a regular basis.

Absolutely the breed matters. I see it in Topsy's two new babies. The Lavender Orpington/Silkie mix chick is mellow and quiet. Easy to catch. The EE/WL/Silkie mix chick is quick and flighty. Hard to catch like her mother is and her grandfather WL Roo was.
