Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I'm kinda pathetic! The other day, I realized it was not one of my New Hampshire Reds who'd gone broody and hatched out five healthy chicks, it was one of my two Isa Browns! Sad, yes, I know! I chalk it up to having a five month old baby and not even considering my Isa Browns to be interested (my two are at least four years old, my NHR are two years, plus Isas browns are not known for going broody). She has done a great job! They are almost two weeks old. I am feeling quite silly about the whole thing. Since this chicken sat through two incubation cycles before hatching out some eggs, I am wondering if the first cycle, one was actually one of my NHR. Then the Isa went broody and I gave her some eggs. I was quite certain, the first go round that it was a NHR and I can tell the difference between mine. Feeling a little dumb today!

Ive had 2 ex batts go broody so i think they are the same as isa browns...

I need HELP, I just found an egg my broody must have pushed out of the nest, stepped on, chick is still alive. I wet the membrane and covered in a wet towel. Broody is off the nest, two more pipping. No incubator, what do I do???

Can anyone say what to do? Im asking for some one on fb, This girl has a hen who has one hatched chick and one egg still under the hen, she said the chick is sitting out of the mam peeping at her and she wont let it under her because she is more bothere about the egg, what do they do?

put it under a light bulb at about 95 degrees (60 watt bulb at about 18 inches) Or on a heating pad on low with a towel over it and keep the membranes moist. Hopefully it is close enough that it will finish hatching. Thats all I can suggest!!

I was considering that.....it was getting cold and the broody was still out running around like a crazy woman so I put it back in with the other eggs and positioned an egg on the broken side. Mom is back on them, do you think I should take it out and do the light bulb? So sad seeing the little eye blinking and looking at me......

I'd cup my hand over the hens eyes and tuck the chick back under her.

If its back under momma and she is being quiet there's not much more you can do for it. It will either live or it wont. Usually momma knows more than we do. She may have kicked it out for a reason Hope it does well.
