my broody izzy is on day 16, i have looked at the eggs, a few are clear, the others have a clear end and veins- so does that mean we are looking at chicks??
sounds like it artsyrobin, congrats !!!!
hey BareFoot Mom where did the little duckling come from, it's so sweet the chick protective services was able to step in and save the day. er well chicks.
Hope all is well with them!!
and stony 30 chicks? wow, I am glad we practice birth control here, my dh says no more coops so I have to limit how many chicks can hatch
but I am happy with the ones we have..
because of my Muscovy sitting on her eggs her 2 sisters have been moved to an extra large dog kennel in our feed/ storage building, they seem okay with the arrangement, still laying eggs. I would love to have a Barn
then i could have all the chickens and ducks I want!!""
poor Iris, she'll get over it though. BFM? do you think she killed her own chick? I was worried my Brahma hen was abandoning her 2 this morning, they will be 4 weeks on the 14th, but when we got home from Church she was back with them, they are to young to be weaned, but my one roo keeps messing with mama. Well hope all Mothers are having a wonderful day!!
any one with multiple broodys and chicks having a problem with the mamas being tempermental with each other?
My broody slp/silkie mix hatched one chick last week and mom and baby are doing really good. She's had the baby out with the general population of birds under 6 months old. Sometimes the adults from Shadow's flock stop by to see what's going on.
When would be a good time to put new eggs under her without it being too much for her? She's already grabbed a few and has made another nest.

Last year I tried it with my broody and the white rock chicken pecked the chick so hard it was dead. So now thinking I should have a special area for hen and chicks.

I did have my hen with the rest of the flock, and I think mum preferred that as when she went out to poo, eat and bath etc another hen would happily sit on the nest to lay (not a broody though)
But I did seperate the mum when the eggs were peeping as I didnt feel safe leaving them all together. I am glad I did this as when I let mum out to do her business a baby followed her, and promptly got pecked at and thrown by one of the other hens.
I am glad I did not risk it, and I will be extra vigilent when the mum goes out to do her business next time
Very pretty stony, are they all sumatra chicks or a mix? My game are mixed with cochin bantam and some are not as high stung as the games are. I only have 1 full game and she is grandma to everyone else but the Brahmas. I love the blue on your hen. Would love to see a full view of her.
Congrats to you wezl on the broody and little one, my little cochin bantam only hatched 1 chick and she is such a good mommie.
