Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Can I take a newly hatched chick from one broody and give it to another? Leaving the broody with no chicks so she'll continue to set the rest of her eggs. The other broody has newly hatched chicks also.

I have a great Broodie Hen I aquired for free because all she wants to do is raise chicks. According to her former owner if she doesn't have eggs to sit on she will find chicks and adopt them. She came with half grown chicks that she adopted from their a batch they hatched in an incubator and had under a light in their shed. They gave me the chicks also just to get rid of the hen. She is a very good mother. I am looking forward to hatching eggs with her in the near future. Thank you for the thread. I am sure I will have many questions.

the hen will most likleys stay on the eggs for another 3 days anyways...

aww it's nice to see these broody mommas with their hatchlings!

I set 4 eggs under my broody the 16th @ 12:30am = this is the first "full" day, I'm excited ~ she is covering them well

But it's only the first day, and it's her very first time trying --- wish us luck.

I've lost count of the broodies and chicks this year. I was turning over the deep litter and cleaning out the nest boxes and found yet another broody had success.
