Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Some chicks are broody stupid at a week old though if hand raised. They don't always know where to go if cold, or to follow mom.

Yes, I think this was the issue yesterday when I tried to intro them. The new babies didn't respond to mom's calls & stood huddled in the corner shivering instead of going under mom with the other babies.

I will try to sneak them in tonight...I may just end up keeping them in the brooder for another week & then putting them outside.

Thanks for the tips!

i want my orp to go broody again next year but i only want her to have 1 chick, i would rather she had one than 4-6, i wouldn't mind 2 though....

Yes, pumpkin is a favourite.
I use a blender to make a puree. Sometimes I add other favourite treats to it to encourage them to eat it up. Some don't like it. Many do. The barred rocks like it more than the others for some reason

I just cut the pumpkin in 1/2. All that they leave is a very thin skin. The rest they eat

Why only 1?
If I were you, I'd get sex linked breeds for her. That way you don't get accidental roos. Two is good, 3 is better (in case 1 doesn't make it).
just because of the boy girl ratio and having to find new homes etc, so if i only had one girl i could keep it, if one boy a friend would take it, i may just leave her to do what she did last time, last time rather the chick fell out the nest and she followed or she took it down and expected to get back up, so if its meant to be that she has more ,she will if not she will take it down again, or the chick will fall down and she follows....
