Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

That stinks. BTW Vanilla Ice was spotted being mated by the maran roo today. So pretty sure she's a she. Hopefully she'll start laying soon. No idea what color egg she will lay as her grandmother laid a white egg, her mom lays a blue green egg and her dad was most likely the partridge silky.

Wait I take that back, her grandmother laid a green egg.

Yes, Smokey hatched the pure breeds Bunny & Rusty the Blue Splash Copper Marans and at the same time Topsy hatched the mutts, Vanilla Ice and the black silky that was killed by a hawk. Bunny just started laying 5 days ago so I am looking for Vanilla Ice to start soon too. Especially since she has White Leghorn in her heritage and her mom lays very regularly. Your chicks are very pretty.

Late but... I use marbles too....whenever I have chicks I put them in the waterer - even the mason jar waterers - for a couple weeks. Makes things a little safer.

I used them w/my current chicks hatched the last Friday in December but I noticed that since they were with a broody - and it was pretty cold outside - I don't think getting into the water was an issue since they went back under mom to keep warm. It was an issue when I brooded under a lamp and they'd just fall asleep any-old-where...including the waterer if those marble hadn't been in there!

Thanks and I like mixed breeds because you don't know what colour chick/adult you will end up with!

I thought so, I've put large pebbles in mine before and dice a couple of times when I couldn't get to the rocks fast enough. But I never thought about marbles. Good idea.

I think I learned about that on here!! I had just enough in a jar in my hutch. My husband came home a couple days ago and said someone at work told him I should put marbles in the water dish. I said Honey, I know. I've done my research. He didn't even want the chickens but he's a big softie when it comes to animals. That's why we kept a puppy from our litter and my daughter finally got a kitten when a 4 week old one was rescued from some brush that was being mowed down. I had to go to TSC for chick feed today. He picks up a large jug of mealworms, puts them in my cart and says, "These are Marshall's (the roo) favorites!"

WE HAVE CHICKS!!!!

These little ones hatched yesterday afternoon/last night!!

My Janice, a smooth Sizzle, had 6 mixed eggs under her. Hopefully we'll see 3 more chicks soon!! Everyone is doing well in the main coop. Janice's sister, Blue, has been sitting right next to Janice, which doesn't seem to bother her at all.

I was fine with the no peeking. Had all I could do to keep hubby & daughter from peeking!

They both were begging me to let them look. Just like Christmas! Now if I can keep the daughter from bringing them in the house, we'll be all set!

I know what you mean, there is one of us here who would like to bring them in sometimes too! I won't say who it is, but he is a lot taller than me!

I have one of those fellows too! It is awesome most of the time, but when neither of us can resist something cute or neat it can get expensive!

Quote: I am getting rid of the silkie eggs because I doubt they are fertile because my rooster is very young and hasnt shown any interest in mating yet. Also I am still trying to sell silkie roosters that I was stuck with when I bought these silkies as chicks (I have 4 to sell). So while I will feel bad about having to get rid of them unfortunatly I know I have to. Thank you for your help. Hopefully Ill have pictures of barred rock chicks with a silkie mama to post in a few weeks!
