Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Poor Topsy. I worry about her. She has really bad rooster damage on her back. And now she also has two gashes from his nails. I put Nustock on them but I'm thinking I may have to isolate her for a couple of weeks.
When my girls start getting too abused, I just kick the rooster out for a week so they can heal a little. It seems to mellow out the roo, since the girls are back to kicking his behind when he returns.... They are not as submissive when he returns and is low chicken on the pecking order for awhile... Plus it does not put Poor Topsy back at start in the pecking order and having to start fresh...
Now if one of my roos start getting really bad, mean and hurtful, off he goes to freezer camp. I have some other roos just waiting to get their own flock. My future flock masters or freezer camp boys are in their own coop...... also, you could try cutting his nails. I know easier said than done.....

Thanks. I think his problem is he's the second roo and all the other ladies are the older partridge Silky's girls. So Topsy is the Maran's target with her being low in the pecking order and small. I have watched him sneak other girls, but the silky catches him and it is all out war. I'll isolate her in the coop for a time so she is still with the flock and consider which rooster to keep, if any, as spring approaches.

The way Asparagus is going, my hens will be sharing Topsy's pain!

I seen one Orpington so far, and one mix. I only gave her a few Orpington eggs, but, we all know how that sometimes works. Obviously someone snuck an egg or two in there. Or she is an egg stealer.

I know what you mean, there is one of us here who would like to bring them in sometimes too! I won't say who it is, but he is a lot taller than me!

I have one of those fellows too! It is awesome most of the time, but when neither of us can resist something cute or neat it can get expensive!
