Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Well..she hatched out 4 Orpingtons and 4 mixed....she also had some eggs that were peeping and already piped..I stuck those under a different broody. 8 chicks in this weather is way to many..I hope the Orpington will take the piped eggs and hatch them..she has been broody for only 5 days and I have been trying to break her...if she hatches these eggs..I will put both hens together and hope they co-raise.

I put Topsy in a cat carrier for tonight. I couldn't find the right wire at the house to block off the broody area like before.. I'll have to pick up some cage wire tomorrow. I wasn't going to pin her up until I caught one of the pullets trying to attack her and peck her back. Her skin is gaping open. So I grabbed her up quickly and shoved her into the nest box until I could run and get the cat carrier. So much drama! Hoping she heals up. I may have to put some sort of bandaging on the wound so it will come together.

Adleast shes safe now, i feel so sorry for low hens in the pecking order, they get such a hard time.

Im so tempted to get a silkie for a broody but im being put off too much!!

Well that did not work..I think it is too cold..it is supposed to be warmer tomorrow. I tented it a bit with weather plastic to try to contain more heat. It is going to drop to -10 tonight. I even added a heat lamp. I know I am never going to do this again..I am not going to sleep worrying about it going out. I have it zip tied and rope tied. and I put a metal pan on top of it to protect the bulb.

Okay not sure why it double posted. Sometimes the mobile app does weird things.

Yes she was much happier this evening with no one pecking at her. I hope to get her a wired off area so she can move around a bit but not get picked on.

Does she get bullied less when she has chicks??
