Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Just had to post some cuteness!

They are adorable!!

Love seeing mama and chicks!

When it was warm: the kiddos were 4.5 wks old and this was ONE DAY in the upper 50's (then it dropped back to the teens next day). The only day she took them outside.

I had some logs cut up that need to burn on the "junk wood pile" so I made some stair steps with them for the kiddos that are hopping distance. Mom is on the ground to the left; CS is coming down the ramp (short for "Charlie's Sister" which is the other araucana.)

Here they are at 5 weeks (last Friday)....look at the difference in the tails and sizes... (As always, trying to guess sex!)

4 on the floor. Left to Right: Yellow, Blue, Black, Orange

Front: Little Black. Smallest; Still not much tail to speak of!

LIttle Black

Little Blue (Second to shortest tail feathers; second to smallest overall) I LOVE THIS COLOR!

Little Orange Second to Largest - Long tail feathers

Little Yellow - Largest (he/she is quite large but Orange is close in size) Longest tail feathers.

I put Topsy in a cat carrier for tonight. I couldn't find the right wire at the house to block off the broody area like before.. I'll have to pick up some cage wire tomorrow. I wasn't going to pin her up until I caught one of the pullets trying to attack her and peck her back. Her skin is gaping open. So I grabbed her up quickly and shoved her into the nest box until I could run and get the cat carrier. So much drama! Hoping she heals up. I may have to put some sort of bandaging on the wound so it will come together.

Adleast shes safe now, i feel so sorry for low hens in the pecking order, they get such a hard time.

All the mommy's and baby's. That is just too cute!!

LM..that is so adorable..them big baby's snugging in for heat.

What is my hen going to do with 8 to keep them warm? Can you imagine what that is going to look like in 4 weeks?
I hope the Orpington is OK with the two eggs that were ready to hatch..She is such a young bird..they should be out tomorrow.
The weather better start getting better soon.

So cute, what breed are they??
This is my first time hatching, and I wasn't very knowledgeable when I ordered the eggs :) I had 4 Light Sussex, but none of them hatched, the other eggs turned out to be a barnyard mix. I wasn't really aware of that until after I already ordered them, so I have some mixed breed chicks, but I am just tickled pink. Based on egg colors and available parentage I would say I have 2 Easter Eggers, 2 Australorp (or part Australorp) and 1 "california white"- the only white egg in the bunch.
