Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

All the mommy's and baby's. That is just too cute!!

LM..that is so adorable..them big baby's snugging in for heat.

What is my hen going to do with 8 to keep them warm? Can you imagine what that is going to look like in 4 weeks?
I hope the Orpington is OK with the two eggs that were ready to hatch..She is such a young bird..they should be out tomorrow.
The weather better start getting better soon.

If the orp is doing okay could you sneak a few more under her from the 8?

It's pretty crazy that all of this 4 can still get under there at night but it's a squeeze and she has to be backed up in a corner to accomplish that. But... it's 13 degrees out this morning and they're walking around like is doesn't faze them at all so even though they're so young they don't seem to need to get warmed up much anymore. First 3 weeks, though, they went under every few minutes.

What is the breed on that momma?

So beautiful!

Haha! I think you're right. She only laid about 10 eggs and then went broody her first time. I'd love to put one of her young silky chicks in there with her to keep her company, but I'm not sure that would be wise until her wound closes up. It scares me to see a gap in her skin.
Could you not put Vanilla Ice in with her??

Well the Orp smashed the chicks..they were flat as pancakes this morning :( she was young and it was a risk.

I did not get all of the chicks in the pictures...they scatter fast and out they went..they are sure skittish.
Did she mean to kill them? or did she just lie flat on top of them??

That is a real bummer. I have had a year old hen pretty much squish her chicks but not enough to kill them. They were flat but as I moved momma, they slide around I guess till their legs worked again. I now take biddies from any young hens (year or younger) after that. I let her keep them and she only did that for 2 nights til either she learned how to sit on them or they stopped getting completely under her. She had 6 biddies, which scared me to death but I had no Biddie box at that time. Built one real fast after that...
