Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

Just found a pic of my 2011 broodies, both failed one was a ex batt, ive still got her now, the other is a Light Sussex and she was killed by a stoat in October or 2011 :( and whats weird is the ex batt was attacked by a stoat several time this year and lived. (if you notice the box they are sitting in is the one the mother orpingotn perches on with Bella and Asparagus!) also if you wonder why the light sussex has a green face on the second pic its because a egg exploded in her face :/

The exbatt looks means LOL that's probably what saved her, spunk. The Sussex looks sweet so she probably was an easy target. So sorry :( I love having the broodies. Smokey hasn't laid in awhile because she's molting. I doubt she will go broody anytime soon. Topsy is still recovering from her wounds and attempting to regrow feathers on her back that the rooster broke off. In a few days I will see about putting the tiniest silky in with her and see what happens. Topsy laid her first post broody egg yesterday, but none today. She was trying to tuck the egg under her, but she's definitely not broody-yet. The surprising one is the buff colored silky Fluffy. She keeps lingering on her eggs and has plucked out her breast feathers. Seems she thinks she will go broody. I keep kicking her out and taking her eggs. Haha

Here's my broody with her first hatch (from shipped eggs) cutest little thing!!

Asparagus tried to attack me, the Bellas picked a fight with a old hen and got beat up so Bellas mother beat the old hen up, then Bella tried to again and her mother joined in so i grabbed the mother and held her and Bella go beat up again, and this was all in 5 minutes!! could have ripped my hair out!

Sorry to hear about your hens fighting, Johnn!

Later in the afternoon. She made a nice nest there and covered herself with straw. But the egg was laid in the nest boxes later.

And her special present!!!!
Left egg is Vanilla Ice (Silky/White Leghorn/EE mix), center is Fluffy (Silky) and right is AC (Ancona).

NICE EGGS!! Vanilla is very pretty!!

Thanks for the info fisherlady! I'll be watching them. There's 2 w/the BR spot on their heads. The all black one confuses me. I read that BR's come from Dominques & PR's. So I looked at pics of the Dominque chicks, some had all black heads. My eggs were from EE's, BR's & WPR's. The roo was a BR cross just not sure what the cross was.

Sweet babies!! :love
