Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

This might be a subject for a different thread but....has anyone heard that using ACV in the drinking water makes the shells too hard for chicks to hatch out? A clerk at TSC told me she learned this in workshop she attended.

I have never heard that before. I put ACV in my chicken's waterers and Topsy hatched out her own eggs which had no trouble getting out of their shell. I'd need to see the study info or reasoning before I would trust that.

I almost forgot about them. Adorable.
AFter the chicks started to die because the mother struggles to keep them warm i had no option but to give them to someone with a heat lamp in the shed. I give them to the woman i got My mother Orpington off but only 5 chicks survived, 2 boys and 3 girls, but she says the mother is fine so thats good :D

As you can see they still like to be together!, shes taught Asparagus well, i stuck my hand in the pop hole to stop her pecking Bella and both The mother and Asparagus went for my hand!:

Oh and heres Bellas egg!:

Does anyone have any experience with frost bite?, If you look on the pic above on Asparagus's comb it has black tips, are they going to fall off? can i stop them falling off?

The front page has an article on frost bite this week... should have some info there.
I had one of my girls do that. But where I am. The lowest it got was 35. So mine was not frost bite. That was a week ago. Now her are red again and didn't fall off. I just don't know
